| Goddamn the price of gas has gone up quite a bit since I was here in the summer driving. I just picked up a new car and it cost me 40000 to fill that mammajamma a little over a 1/3 of a tank. 90,000 to fill a hyundai sonata for christsakes...What's this world coming to..I should go throw myself down an elevator shaft. |

Only use the car when necessary.
Although we have a car, we tend to travel by subway. |

Gas is over 8 USD a gallon in England.
Quit relying on your car in Korea. In the USA, it's often necessary. Not here. |

To the OP... you are living in Korea. You don't need a car. I have lived here quite comfortably for nearly 15 years without one.
Get out an walk ya lazy sod! |

| I have a Hyundai in the US. At the current rates, about $3 per gallon, which I believe are about the same as in 2006, it only costs about $22 to fill the thing up. I love my car and I love myself. |

The Awakening, you picked a very fitting title for your thread indeed. Since 1998, the price of oil itself has gone from $9/barrel($11 when adjusted for inflation) to over $90/barrel today. That is a whopping 9 fold increase!
Since oil is priced in dollars, Americans and other countries who use dollars heavily will be most affected by the price increase. For Korea, I imagine that the increase in the Dollar price of oil would be partially offset by changes in the exchange rate between the Won and the Dollar.
If you go to http://www.energybulletin.net/ , you will find opinions from prominent geologists who believe that mankind's days of cheap oil are almost up. If and when oil production goes from the current plateu of 84 mbd to 80 mbd over the next few years, instead of going to 90 mbd, then there will be actual shortages and the oil will have to be rationed out to the countries based on actual needs like food production and public transportation.
Travelling will become more expensive in the years to come and people will have to rely on lightweight vehicles for land transportation(eg motorbikes and bicycles). For Visa runs to Japan, the Korean Government should seriously consider allowing people to travel to Japan by sailboats or canoes. |

What is the actual cost of a liter in Korea now? Coming from England, I'm used to extortionate prices.. but frankly, I don't care how much it costs and haven't paid much attention to the prices when filling up. Even if it were 2x the cost I'd probably still use my bike (car would be a different story ), much faster and much more convenient than public transport. |

I quite agree, driving to the other side of the street is so much easier. |
