|
|
Sorry if this has been done to death but the search function returned nothing.....
Assuming the landlord will allow me I want to get a cat or a dog for my 1.5 bedder apartment...
So my first question is which is more suited as a home pet? A cat or a dog...I would be willing to walk the dog after work....
Secondly, is it as simple as food, litter box and off to the vet now and then for a check-up?...
Thirdly, I'm in the Suji/Bundang area of Yongin...any advice on how to track down a specimen...I would prefer to go to an SPCA than a store that sells pets...
Many thanks.... |

Go to the Buy/Sell Forum .. at the top is a sticky "Adopting pets in Korea" ... there are some recent posts, as well as contact people to get in touch with re shelter animals.
Or this link: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=101200 will take you to a recent urgent request to adopt from a shelter. |

That completely depends on the time that you are willing to invest in the animal. Dogs are typically more dependent on you to care for them and give attention. Cats are less dependent, obviously. I prefer the company of a dog. You should definitely check out the http://www.lonelylifetime.com/ site, as that shelter is/was due to close. They had an abundance of animals that needed to find homes soon, or they were going to be euthanized. My jindogae came from there. She is a wonderful dog. |

Your first step is to ask the landlord if it's okay to have a dog. Then let us know what kind of dog you want and tell us the size of your apartment. I'll tell you this though: If the apartment is noisy there's no way your landlord will put up with a barking dog.
A cat you can pick up anywhere, unless you want one that's a special breed. As for dogs, a smaller purebred would be best for you-and more accepting of your landlord-though the mixes are smart and will be loyal to the end. Trust me. I had a mix that I'd bought as a puppy at an open market there in Korea and toted it around for five years from apartment to apartment. He was only about 11 kilos, well-behaved, not very noisy. But I had to train him sternly not to bark.
It's doable to have a dog there. It all depends on your landlord, location, and lifestyle. Yet parks are all over in Korea, so there's always somewhere to walk them. AND NEVER KEEP IT OUTSIDE ALONE! They will get stolen, and eaten, particularly if they're smaller mixes. |

No.
The first step is for the OP to ask themself, "Am I really going to take care of this animal through thick and thin over the next decade or two of it's life, no matter the cost and effort? Or am I just getting it to not feel so lonely?"
If it's option one, I say go for it. If it's option two, a smack for even considering it, cause gawdammed I hate when people here take on pets they ain't going to take full responsibility for. |

I agree that you have to commit yourself to the lifespan of that animal. It shouldn't be considered as just another possession while you live in Korea. To refer to the afore mentioned comment about purebred smaller dogs; I tend to disagree. Smaller dogs tend to be noisier (barking at every random noise they hear) and have anxiety issues. I'm not stereotyping all breeds by any means. This is just my experience with small dogs in general. |

Are you giving it up?
Also where did you get it from? |

Giving him up No way, a pet is for life dude
But he is quiet, and good for a small apartment (though craves LOTS of attention)
A got him recommended (from another expat) from a Pet store in Suwon. Got him when he was 7 weeks old. |

There three puppies in this pet shop near my home in Changwon, they have been there for four months, maltese I believe, they are in poor condition and I think they are losing their minds.
I want to help them. I'm tempted to take one in even though I'd be giving money to the pet shop (I hate pet stores and I always buy from RSPCA) but I'm thinking these poor things are goners.
Is there anything I can do? Any agency to report this place to? And if I cave and buy one of these puppies can anyone give me any advice about shipping them home in 8 months when I return to Canada (I heard rumours AIR CANADA won't fly pets anymore)? If these dogs are mentally damaged (they appear to be obessive complusive) can they recover? |

www.lonelylifetime.com as it has been suggested.
the shelter has been given a 4-6month extension to place all of the dogs in homes. I adopted my dog from there as well and she's great. I've never heard her bark. Do not get a dog here if you are not planning to take it home with you. |

I went back to the pet store, and I inquired about buying one of those dogs (there are six all together) and I was told that they are the owner's pets! And therefore not for sale Way to advertise pet care and grooming services! They tried to sell me a puppy instead.
I guess all I can do is visit them and offer them some affection, three of them are still so playful and sweet. The others are in serious need of a vet. We are going to volunteer to walk them, which might be hard considering I only know about twelve sentences in Korean.
I'm so glad about that extension, we want to rescue a dog. We are in Changwon though how could I get it here? |

Scarlet...
the lonelylifetime.com site is pretty much linked up with a rescue in Daejeon. I'm not sure where you're located but from Seoul I just took the KTX to Daejeon. There are volunteers from Seoul and Daejeon who are going to the shelter each Saturday to help place dogs in adopted and foster homes since the shelter is being shut down. Thankfully the woman who runs the shelter was give an extension. If you need contact information, PM me and I can give you the email address of a guy who guys down each week. With KTX or the other train, you just need to have the dog in some sort of carrier. Dogs are permitted on the subway in carriers as well, or on your lap if they are small dogs. If you need a taxi, if the driver doesn't care about the dog, they'll stop. But I had no problems with mine and she's a cocker spaniel, so not your typical tiny Korean dog. |
