I love bands like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Faith No More, Type O Negative, Black Sabbath, Pantera. Ill never forgive myself for getting into Tool this late, especially considering Ive listened to (some) Metal since I was 11. For some weird reason, Im hostile to new things. Anything Ive never heard or seen already I instinctively assume to be crap (otherwise Id have heard or seen it!).
Im obsessed with the Lateralus album in particular. My favorite track is the first (and heaviest) The Grudge. Whether Im into their other albums remains to be seen, but this record is up there with Angel Dust, Nevermind, Black Sabbath: Vol 4, Seasons in the Abyss, Rust in Peace in the all-time classics stakes.
The reason this band are so amazing is that their music is at once (1) barbaric, base, simplistic, primitive, (2) abstract, complex, transcendental, beautiful, uplifting and profound. Any band mixing (1) and (2) together is just.freaking amazing! Its essentially grunge mixed with arty space-rock, but Jesus, these guys are a unique entity and its damned inspiring stuff, by golly!
Say absolutely anything about Tool. Be warned you are a tool, Justin is inevitable and not remotely amusing. Your favorite album, track? Been to a gig? How do you rate their latest album? If you have an opinion on the band Tool, state it. |

Been to three of their shows. Once sober, once on acid, and once on X. Each one was special and unique. Their music was therapy for years. Big fan since '94...Once you get the message, hang up the phone. Timothy Leary got the message but kept talking. Alan Watts knew when the conversation was over...Tool is the gap between words. |

I owned Undertow and I enjoyed it. Many of my friends had more of their stuff. I never quite got it. I enjoyed them without ever becoming a convert. People get REALLY into them and I know I'm missing something but I've never been patient enough to figure out quite what it was. The OP made some interesting remarks and I'm certainly willing to give them another shot. Care to elaborate on what sets them apart from the herd?

Tool is a very dynamic and innovative band. I like easter's description: "Tool is the gap between words". I would not rate their live show as one of my favorites though, however. Maynard was pissed about god knows what and sat in a chair in the back of the stage and sang. You couldn't even see him.
That beside, the technical difficultly of the drumming is in a league of it's own. Maynard's double mic singing technique might not be original but it definitely seperates it from the rest.
My favorite album has to be Aenima, with Eulogy being one of my favs. |

Tool is just simply amazing!
They are so very talented, but don't look to show it off in a math rock style ala Dream Theater. Tool is all about the GROOVE!
It's a huge sound that can slither like a scary and sexy monster. They can also bring it way down to a whisper. It's very emotional music.
Enough of the hyperbole. They are just a great band that does music the way they want to feel- not just to be popular and sell records.
I've seen them twice- sadly both outside in the day time(one was in Seoul).
I believe Aenima & Lateralus to be their best work. I didn't get into 10,000 Days as much.
The thing about Maynard is that he's not always about being the center of attention- very unusual for a front man. Yes, he has been known to wear a woman's wig and full kabuki make-up on stage, but he also takes a behind the scenes position sometimes.
The whole thing is that it's not about looking at them really. It's about experiencing the music. That's why they focus more on the screen visuals. They mostly just stand there.
They are a very different sort of band and I love them! |

^ You're kinda describing the way I feel about Mr. Bungle. I'll have to give Tool another listen. |

I'm into basically the same sorta bands you list at the start and have to admit I've never really checked out tool. Heard negative things about them back years ago and like a sheep didn't bother to find out for myself. Maybe now is the time to have a listen..... |

Eulogy is one helluva song...
I heard they suck live, but I've never seen them. Aenima and Lateralus are their best work IMO. |

Tool is in my top 3 favorite bands. I usually listen to audiobooks on my iPod, but if I'm listening to music, it's a given that a few Tool songs will be heard.
Aenima is my favorite album and my favorite tracks from it are Eulogy, Forty Six & 2, Hooker with a *beep* and Aenima. I'm not sure I could name an all-time favorite track, however, as it seems to change with the seasons.
I've been to two Tool concerts, with the last one being about 2 summers ago. I had some exceptional LSD which made the show even more incredible.
Regarding their latest album, 10 000 Days, it is the one I listen to the least. Vicarious, Jambi, The Pot and Right In Two get regular play though. |
