| I'd like to have a blackberry-like device with a tactile keyboard, bluetooth, and wi-fi. I just don't need the phone part. Recommendations? |

What do you need it for exactly? Just web-surfing? Email? Word documents? Do you want it to have a camera? GPS? What's your price range? If you can give some details, it would be helpful.
Nokia are just about to release the N810 which, despite being made by Nokia, is NOT a phone but an internet tablet designed mainly for websurfing/email, but it does have a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. I think it's going to cost around $400-450. |

Good questions. I don't want to completely rule out a phone, but since I already have one that works fine, I don't need that functionality. Of course, if adding the phone doesn't decrease the price of the device, that's fine--it's one less device I have to carry around.
I want to use this as an MP3 player, and for web surfing and email. Camera/video is not important. I want to spend under $500.
Any ideas? |

Agreed. The only problem might be that the Nokia doesn't have much internal memory and if you want to use it as an MP3 player then you'll have to buy memory cards which might increase the price a bit.
Another option might be the Apple Touch if you're willing to sacrifice the tactile keyboard. That's got wifi, email and reasonable internal storage and I'm sure will be great as an MP3 player. |

| If I wanted the sac the tactile Keyboard, there would be a lot more options open to me. Not to mention that although I'm as Apple fanboy as they come, I think the Touch is overpriced for what it delivers. After thinking awhile, I can't justify the price tag of the n810 and was wondering if the (much cheaper) n770 or n800 would be the way to go. The only problem is who to buy it from... |

Doubt you can get it in Korea. Nokia pulled out of this country many years ago and I don't think any of their products are available here, at least not legally. I'm sure it's easy to order from abroad, but then you'll get stung on the import tax. |

dreadster, what would you suggest? My ideal device is something smaller than the Nokia tablets, only about the size of an iPod Touch with an extendable keyboard. Maybe I will have to cave and just buy a smartphone here...but then the OS will be in Korean |

Some options. These are all phones, but they all have wifi, a QWERTY keyboard (not all sliders), are smaller than the Nokia tablet and come in at or under $500.
The HTC S710

The HTC P4350

HP Ipaq HW6915

Fujitsu Siemens T830

I can't really comment on the quality of any of these as I haven't owned any of them but I remember the reviews for them were pretty positive, especially the Fujitsu. Can probably buy these from places like expansys Hong Kong/Korea (see Fujitsu link).
Hope this helps. |

| Thanks for those! All of them are perfect for what I'm looking for. If I get one, is it just a matter of switching out the sim card from my current phone? |

Have you looked at the EEE pc?
You can buy that from that HK website above for about 360 dollars.
Little larger than what you wanted there but at 0.9kgs it's light. |

Sadly no. It is basically impossible to use foreign phones on local contracts here due to the Korean telcoms locking things down so tight. I brought my Nokia with me and have tried everything to get it working on a local contract but it's just not possible. This isn't a big problem for me as I can use my phone for so much else: camera/video, mp3 player, web browsing via wifi and all the personal information apps for organising my life. however, if you buy one of these you won't be able to use it as a phone!! However, if you buy an unlocked phone, you will be able to use it in virtually any other country in the world (except of course Korea!). This is one thing that truly sucks about being in Korea... |
