It's amazing that some of you Westerners are actually eating kimchi and those spicy Korean soup. How did you get used to such food? What was your first impression of them when they were placed on the dining table? Were you afraid to eat them? Any comments? |

Its not spicy. Most Korean food isn't even that strange. There is little to get used to. |

That's funny.
Most Korean food isn't very spicy. I'd give it a medium to medium hot, and very occasionally a hot.
Afraid to eat it? Hell, it took days to convince my director to give me Korean food! He insisted that I wouldn't like Korean food and kept ignoring my requests to have what he was having. He kept getting me don-kass. |

I'll agree with bugs. When I first came to Korea I found Kimchi do be ridiculously spicy. But as time went by i suppose you just adjust to it till you just don't notice the spice, just the taste(which i like quite a lot now). Some of the soups i still find a little too hot, but most Korean foods have very little spice at all. Just eat it frequently and over time you won't even notice it. |

Korean food is not spicy, I'm with the beav here... med to high med at best. My first lunch in Korea was kimchee chiggae. The foriegner I was with ordered for me and I was later told asked the ajumma to make it extra spicy. It didn't even faze me.
The best Korean food is Dalk Tori Tang (�ߵ�����)... oooh... my fav. It's perfect, chicken and potatoes and a little bit of spice all wrapped up into one dish. |

The food's not too spicy for me, but it is often served too hot (as in boiling furiously in the bowl for a while before I can stick a spoon in there). |

I love those hot pot dishes, especially Doelsot Bibimbap. the crust at the bottom is a treat. |

It's amazing some of these Koreans can eat hamburgers and hotdogs. I mean, don't they find them too bland? How do they even manage to eat them without choking or spitting pieces out? I wonder if ajossi was afraid to eat a hamburger the first time he saw it. |

I like kamja tang in the winter, big pork bones and potatoe stew, and good spices...
But yeah, it's not nearly as hot as Malaysian. |

You get used to it by eating it. I know what you are saying, growing up, the mom's cooking was bland, so it took some time, about a year to not be bothered by it, about two and half to crave it. |

not all that difficult...besides, Korean is not as spicy as Koreans think it is....I ate some mak gook su the other day and the waitress asked me if it was too spicy because I was a foreigner...I looked her in the eyes and told her it wasn't spicy enough!! The look on her face was precious! |

I like all Korean food EXCEPT fermented stuff.. but its not an issue about spicy.. I quite like that.. I just don't like fermented stuff
Galbi and all of that is delicious.. and anything with rice.. its all good..
Despite my past aversion to fermented 'stuff'.. I do now enjoy the kimchee.. the cabbage kimchee kind.. it just kind of clicked one day.. for reasons unknown and found I really liked it..
Incidently, I find it strange that most Koreans think Westerners don't like spicy food.. when I think spicy is no problem.. its just that fermented vegetables strikes some of us kind of weird. I always preferred boiled or raw.. but not fermented.
Most Korean food.. particuarly the kind thats cooked at your table.. whatever it is.. and no matter how hot it is.. is always very very good in my opionion.. from Day 1 |

Nothing in Korea compares, heat-wise, to British-style Vindaloo. It's just pure masochistic.
I've had hot-wings in Canada that puts the hottest Korean tach-kalbi to shame.
Texan-style chili........'nuff said.
Koreans look visibly deflated when you inform them their food is not so spicy. |

Yeah love that stuff, especially when they make it really hot. Although bone soup is really good if it has enough potatoes. Korea food is nothing compared to SE Asian food when it comes to spicyness so I like complaining to Koreans about how their food isn't spicy enough (have only had one dish, some kind of mushroom soup that was honestly mouth-blazing).
As far as kimchi goes I still don't like the bitter fermented taste but its slowly starting to grow on me. I just each at least a piece or two every day and after a year I should be addicted to the stuff. |
