So I was heading off to Sinchon last night, all psyched up for a night on the fizz, when I jump into a taxi. The taxi driver said 'hello' and we drove off. He starts talking to me (and good for him, I might add, for trying to start a conversation) which, I didn't understand one word.
I was thinking to myself "What a friendly chap this bloke is." and then he turned around to talk to me and he REEKED of soju.
My taxi driver was pretty much wasted. I understand a little bit of Korean, but this guy wasn't making any sense what so ever.
To his credit, his driving didn't seem to be effected. But then again it's hard to judge good Korean taxi driving from bad. Sorry if that upsets people, but man what a ride.
Screw the theme park rides, get yourself a drunk taxi driver. Better than Disneyland.
Anyone else have any interesting taxi stories? |

I had a guy call his young daughter (maybe 8?10?) on his cel phone so she could speak with a real live native English speaker. It took longer for him to convince her to talk to me than our whole conversation, but on the upside, he didn't charge me for the ride. |

I had an extremely drunk bus driver who fell asleep at a stop light and passed my stop. He let me out about a half mile down from where I wanted. |

Aren't they all drunk drivers here? They seem to think Red light means to creep through the intersection, almost breaking the legs of any pedestrian. They can't tell the difference between the sidewalk and the street. They dont signal. EVER.
Soju and dog soup are the blame, I think. It's gotta be something. |

Its not just drunk korean taxi-drivers. I drove a cab during uni back home and I'll tell ya, I knew a couple of the old-timers who regularly knocked back a couple during the shift. One of 'em I knew ("Old Bobby")
drank bourbon to help control his developing parkinsons disease.
sheeze.....
Bob is now dead. He was a farmer by day and cabbie by night (and incidently one of the nicest blokes you could ever hope to meet). One day his tractor rolled on him....... |

i used to take cabs regularly in san francisco and one guy that picked me ~3-4 times ( i was late for work and didn't have time to call for another) was always loaded up ( speed, i think) he looked heroin chic, was all sweaty and fidgety and drove about 50 mph, even over hills and through downtown san francisco.
in comparison, korean cabbies seem safe to me. |
