So I am curious as to whether or not I should take out some extra insurance before I head out to South Korea? How much does the regular plan cover, and does it kick in right away after getting there?

Ah, you must be American and scared by the fked up health care system and costs there.

Korea is cheap. The insurance here is plenty unless you want to get extra for having a baby. Going to have a baby here? If not, don't get extra.

Well, you are close enough to the USA's steaming pile of a healthcare system to be scared!

But honestly, you'll be fine with Korea insurance. Even without insurance, costs can be a fraction of what they are in N. American clinics.

The registration for Health Insurance can happen as soon as you have your ARC ... which you have to get within 90 days of arriving ... but can get as soon as you do arrive ... In my case my school helped me to go and get it ... and then did all the paperwork for pension and health insurance.... So yes, it can definitely start soon after as you arive ...

I agree with what's been said thus far. You don't need extra health insurance because once you start your job and get everything settled you'll have enough. It's a 50/50 split with the employer with each of you paying around 45,000 won a month.

The only thing it hasn't covered is getting your teeth cleaned and that was like 60,000-70,000 won.
