I am currently finishing my English degree in college right now, and shopping around for jobs in Korea. My boyfriend also wants to go with me to Korea, however, he does not have a degree and unfortunately does not intend on getting one. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about finding work or getting a work visa in Korea without teaching English.
I know one of the jobs I'm interviewing for on Geoje Island has a lot of shipyards nearby, and I know that a lot of Americans work on them, however, I wasn't sure if anyone knew anything about how difficult obtaining work over in Korea really was or if he could get work doing something on these shipyards.
PS- does anyone have opinion about Geoje Island? I've heard complaints and nonstop lauding. As someone new to teaching and Korea, would it be less than wise to work on an island? |

Geoje-do is not a bad location. It's just off the coast and is connected to the mainland by a bridge. It's pretty and not crowded, with easy access to Busan and Masan. Because it's on the south coast, it's winter weather is much milder than up here in Seoul. Think warm jacket, not winter coat.
Boyfriend: As I understand things, a foreigner can only get a job if it can be proven that a Korean cannot be found who can do the work. There are a lot of foreigners working in the shipyards, but I believe they are engineers and things like that. Without a degree, I think your b/f is SOL. |

Leave the sod at home--he's only holding you back--and come on over. You may regret it if you don't.
Barring that, he may be able to get a job packing meat or slaughtering dogs, while you're putting that degree in Art to use teaching English! |

I'm wondering what his chances of getting through Immigration are.
Quote: |
Agent: Excuse me, you have no return ticket. How long do you intend to be here?
BF: Well, I'll be looking for work and as soon as I find a job, I'll get the right visa. Don't worry. I won't work on a tourist visa.
Agent: Glad to hear that, sir. May I ask where you will be staying?
BF: I'll be staying with my girlfriend. She's teaching English here.
Agent: Ah, so you're going to look for work as an English teacher. What degree do you have.
BF: Oh, no. I'll look for something else. I don't have a degree...What? Get these cuffs off! Help! {Muffled whimpering} |
Now, that's the way it could go if the Immigration Agents here actually were any good at speaking English. A few are, but definitely not the average bloke you meet on the way through the cattle cull or whatever the real name for that line-up is. How well do you think it'll go then?
Obtaining employment overseas isn't the lark it used to be. And Korea might as well be an island as the only border you can walk over, you don't want to.
{Edited for spelling.}

There's another option for the OP. She could marry the dude. Of course, he can't work here but he could be a househusband. |
