I have to remind myself of this kind of stuff when baby bites...ouch!

Gene 'links breastfeeding to IQ'

Quote:
A single gene influences whether breastfeeding improves a child's intelligence, say London researchers.

Children with one version of the FADS2 gene scored seven points higher in IQ tests if they were breastfed.

But the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences study found breastfeeding had no effect on the IQ of children with a different version.

The gene in question helps break down fatty acids from the diet, which have been linked with brain development.

Seven points difference is enough to put the child in the top third of the class, the researchers said.

Some 90% of people carry the version of the gene which was associated with better IQ scores in breastfed children

Breastfeeding 'aids class status'

Quote:
Babies who are breastfed are more likely to move up the social ladder as adults, a study has suggested.

The University of Bristol team looked at 1,400 babies born from 1937-1939 and followed their progress for 60 years.

Those who were breastfed were 41% more likely to move up in class than those who were bottle-fed.

Experts said the Archives of Disease in Childhood study supported the idea that breastfeeding led to better long-term outcomes for children.

The people studied had all originally taken part in the Boyd Orr Study of Diet and Health in Pre-War Britain carried out in 1937-1939.

They were followed up until an average age of 73.

Whether or not a baby was breastfed was less to do with class than it is now, when the practice is often more popular with middle-class families.

In fact, there may have been a slightly increased chance that richer families would bottle-feed babies, because they would be able to afford formula milk and nannies.

Other than statistics what is the hard science behind the hypothesis? We all know what you can do with statistics.

I mean statistics are fine and all that but if someone was to tell me that 98% of all non-koreans get sick from eating kimchi I would still want to know why. Wink

I intend to go a year for certain, and then up to two years, depending on whether baby_bird wants to or not. If we get to two years, and he's still keen, I'll assess how awkward it is (regarding work, daily schedule etc) and perhaps keep breastfeeding him part-time, if he's really keen. I know some posters on this board have fed their kids past two because the kids didn't want to stop.

Little_bird had his full year, but he started losing interest shortly after and I tried to keep him going, but at 16 months he just refused altogether, and would only drink the bottled cow's milk my mum and husband had been feeding him.

My mother tried to breast-feed me, but failed.

I revealed this once before on the forum and it was alleged by R.S.Refugee that this was why I was a failed liberal. Confused

Hahaha! That's cute. [And I dimly recall that exchange, too]. And where is RSR these days? Wish he'd pop in from time to time.

And think about those 7 extra points of IQ you missed out on. Twisted Evil But you seem to be doing well enough without them - just teasing.

I was only kidding, Kuros. My mother was one of those high-tone, Southern Baptist Hillbillies who thought she was too high-toned and only knuckle-draggers were in to anything as icky as breast-feeding. But, hey, look how I turned out. So, it can't be that essential, right? Very Happy Laughing Very Happy

I would've taken the shot, too. I just remember it so well because I thought seriously, "Hrmmm, I wonder what might've been different if I had been breastfed?"

You'd have 7 extra IQ points to play with, and you'd be a right posh git to boot.

Perhaps with those 7 extra points, I'd be able to figure out what 'right posh git' meant.

Ee, tha dun't knoh 'ow to speak proppa, does tha lad?

Right in this context is sort of like real:

    US: He's a real asshole.
    UK: He's a right arsehole

Posh from Wiki (highlights are mine):
Quote:
In American English, "posh" is usually used to describe luxury objects; the interior of a Rolls-Royce, for example, might be called posh. In British English, the same meaning for objects and styles holds, but people can also be posh (although not "a posh" as in the original usage), by which it is meant that they display both wealth and "upper class" tastes. Sometimes, there is some implication of ostentation or snobbery in such a description, and it is usually used in a derogatory fashion.

Git from wiki:
Quote:
Git is a relatively mild British slang term, used to denote a silly, incompetent, stupid, annoying, childish or senile elderly person. It is usually used as an insult, more severe than twit but less severe than a true profanity like wanker or arsehole, and may often be used affectionately between friends.

I question the way they've graded the severity of 'git,' I'd say 'twit' was far more insulting. I'd never affectionately call my friends a twit, but I'll regularly call them a 'git'

All in keeping with the thread title, of course. Smile
