This is not the first time I have walked into a small ma and pop store with a shopping bag from a larger store and got b*tched out for it. I often buy meat, milk, and veggies at a larger store next door and then find I forgot something like salt, sugar, and soju or beer. So I stop in at the tiny store on my way home and end up getting the 3rd degree from the shop keeper for shopping big stores and not buying it all from her. I simply forgot tonight that it's not OK to go to small stores with a larger store shopping bag. I showed her my items and she showed me substitutes she had for them and demanded I buy them, I didn't get angry or anything and I just said, "kamsamnida and anigaseyo," and walked out after paying for the salt, sugar, and soju I bought from her. There is only this one tiny store and then a small grocery store next door in my local area so I don't have many choices, but I can ride the bus down the street to Homeplus and Emart. I won't go back to that tiny store.

She spoke Korean and some English and made her point clear to me and I told her in English it is my choice on where I shop and what I buy, not the shop keepers and she acted like she was right, but I just left it at that instead of getting into a conflict. She doesn't have much more than a few small basic items, she doesn't sell everything I had in my bag and her substitutes are more expensive.

I noticed sales persons in many stores being rude and demanding that I buy their products to protect their livelihoods when I walk by without buying their goods as if I owe them something which I don't. It's a free market society in capitalism where it is your right to pick and choose products and services. I don't understand every word people are saying, but I get the point loud and clear now that I do understand them much better now as well as knowing some Korean.

How can they act so rude like this and stay in business? Why do sales people not respect their customers and the general public? Does the general public bow to these unreasonable demands? Probably not everyone, but some do and stores just try to push people around. I want to say in Korean, "It's my money and I paid my dues for it which leaves it my right to decide how I spend it," but don't quite know how to.

I've experienced something similar. They didn't get my business anymore.

I agree with the shopkeeper. What you did was extremely tacky and likely to get the same response anywhere in the world. Use common sense, if you have any. Buy your salt and soju at the tiny store FIRST. Then, go to the big store and get whatever else you need. Problem solved and no hard feelings.

hoss.

If you buy all your products from her, she might throw in a bonus service...

Hey, it's everyone's right to shop at a number of stores while carrying the bags before heading home. No shopkeeper has any right to complain to you about how you shop. They are only asking for business failure by acting this immature and unprofessional. In many countries I carried different shopping bags on my Saturday outings and never received a rude and negative response like this. This is out of place and screams to me not to patronize shops that can't respect how you spend your money. I know this is not America or Europe, but I know this is very inappropriate on their part.

I disagree that the shopkeeper is right as it's a free market society and it your prerogative on how and where you shop. It shouldn't matter what you are carrying or doing as long as you are not stealing, being rude, or hurting anyone.

* I take it that you are a troll looking for an on line heated argument. Well, you got my response and that's that. You're looking to get a rise out of me for your enjoyment. Go fish for bigger fish and rock on.

If you look at my history on Dave's you will quickly see that your accusation of my "trolling" is unfounded. I think that what you did WAS rude and I'm entitled to my opinion.

Perhaps you could avoid this problem in the future by putting your purchases from the big store in an unlabeled bag?

It's rude to show that you shop at others stores? That's just crazy. Would you say that is also true if someone is shopping about Myoungdong carrying various bags from various shops? How about in a mall? Should I not let the people at whoau know that I also just came from fubu where I purchased something? Ridiculous.

QFT.

The last time I was at my local Bennigan's I ordered a medium steak. (I generally figure that medium is a safe choice, they can F it up a bit over or under and it's generally ok.)

Anyway, on their freaking menu, they have a pictorial guide to choosing how you want your steak done. Going by this guide, I chose, as was my prior inclination, medium, which generally means just slightly pink in the middle.

So, anyhow, my steak arrives, and it's bloody and raw in the middle. So, I get the wife to call over the waiter, who then proceeds to tell me that I ordered my steak wrong. Apparently, I was supposed to order well-done, despite the fact that I was using their own guidelines. So, we open the menu, and point out the pictorial steak-ordering guide and show this jackass what a medium steak is supposed to look like. He then changes his tune to "well, our steaks are frozen so that's why it came out wrong."

No shit Sherlock, but then why did you try to blame me originally? Anyway, I sent the steak back to be cooked a bit more, and it comes back to me only slightly less bloody (but much drier) than when I'd originally gotten it. Christ.

So, in any case, this jackass waiter, for whatever reason, was completely unwilling to admit fault (his or the cook's) despite ample proof that they'd made a mistake.

The spiteful, petty little underdog should at least learn to win people over before it can earn sympathy. Until it does, I would feel no guilt in giving my money to the gracious winner.

Give your money to capitalists with a clue.

It is (unfortunately) the waiter's job to toe the party line. The real blame lies with the restaurant (or, at least, the chef).

The small store owner is under huge pressure to make money. They make tiny money from each purchase because they can't order in huge numbers. Each store is independent from the others even though they have the same sign. Those small stores die fast and in pain. I can understand the owners point of view a little...

I can understand too. However, the "give me your money you b@$t@rd!" angle is a little counterproductive. Store owners like that are just as likely to treat their assistants in a worse manner. And once they look for others lower on the pecking order, they automatically forfeit their underdog status and become just another yuppie (albeit a little scruffier).

EDIT: Hmmm ... this underdog political dynamic might be a microcosm of something more global ...

The shopkeeper means it in a sweet way. If she only saw you as a foreigner, she wouldn't have bished at you. Say sorry and bow. Never come back if she really freaked you out =P
