The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday night in Cincinnati announced the acquisition of one of the most desired free agents in the mixed martial arts market, Brock Lesnar.
In a brief interview with commentator Joe Rogan, Lesnar stated, I finally made the big time baby.
Lesnar only has one professional MMA fight to his credit, a win over Min Soo Kim at K-1 Dynamite!! USA in Los Angeles, but he has 18 years of amateur wrestling in his background including a National Collegiate Athletic Association national title. He also has extensive training in MMA.
Ive been training about two years now for this sport, said Lesnar. Ive always loved this sport. Ive always wanted to participate in it (and) Im on the battleship, the U.S.S. UFC.
No timeframe or opponent was given for Lesnars UFC debut.

A very good test for Lesnar right off the bat. Good. |

Agreed. If Lesnar does in fact lose to Mir they can say that he lost to a former champion. If Lesnar fought a nobody and lost it would look bad. |

Mir is a striker and Brazilian ju-jit-su master, whose MMA career was disrupted by a motorcycle accident. He didn't look good in a couple comeback matches, but appeared in much better form his last match.
He only weighs 220 lbs., though, so Lesnar will have about a 50 lb. weight advantage.
If Lesnar is durable enough to survive Mir's stand-up strikes and takes it to the ground, he may be able to overpower him with a strong "ground-and-pound" attack, but Mir is expert at applying submission holds - so it figures to be a very interesting match (the night before the Super Bowl...)
Reportedly, Lesnar requested that Mir be his first opponent in UFC, so either his confidence level must be pretty high - or he wants to quickly see how he matches up with top caliber fighters.

Yeah, Mir looked good on the ground against Hardonk, a kickboxer with *no* ground experience whatsoever.
Mir's wins used to come by submissions, when he was good before the injury. If he goes to the ground against as experienced a wrestler as Lesnar, he's going to be on the bottom and he's going to get pounded out.
Mir is just a name casual fans know. He's a tomato can. Did you see him against Vera? He stands no chance in this fight. None.
He's 6'1". In modern MMA, he should be fighting 205, if not 185. He's going to be EATEN. |

I am not sure if this has been discussed yet, but in other UFC news, Liddell and Silva is going to go down in December at UFC 79.

Las Vegas, NV (USA) For years, UFC fight fans have speculated about the outcome of a historic dream matchup between two legendary figures in the sport of mixed martial arts, Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva. Tonight, on Spike TVs 2007 Scream Awards, UFC President Dana White announced that this dream will finally become a reality when UFC and PRIDE former champions Chuck The Iceman Liddell and The Axe Murderer Wanderlei Silva face each other at UFC 79: NEMESIS live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center Saturday, December 29, 2007. |

I think he's a decent opponent for Lesnar to break his UFC cherry on. Not top caliber, but not a schmuck either.
Later, I definitely want to see Lesnar against Gonzaga (maybe even Sylvia), and I was hoping for a match against a vet like Couture (won't happen now). Down the road, though, I'd pay anything to see Lesnar in the ring with Fedor. |

Lesnar, at this point in his "career", is a novelty act. Shame on Dana White for putting him on a card so soon. I think anyone would be hard-pressed not to recognize Lesnar's potential and obvious physicality, but for now, he doesn't have nearly enough ring time to get in the octagon with 90% of the UFC's heavyweights. If Mir shows up in shape, this should be over fast. |

Lesnar might surprise you... he's been hardcore training now for 2 years, and doesn't expect to count solely on his wrestling. He's been learning BJJ and some standup techniques.
I still think he's best suited for ground and pound, than either stand up fights or submission. |

Oh, don't get me wrong, Frank. I hope the big fella is successful, and the heavyweight division needs some new blood, as it's probably the least deep right now, but I still think this is too soon. Mir, who I think is a knob, has some good skills. Maybe Lesnar should pound on some of the meatheads of yore - Polar Bear Varelans, Tank Abbott, that Sumo guy from UFC 2 or 3. |

A "legend in WWE?!?!" Meaningless. What is meaningful is that he was an NCAA champion, and that he has now been training in MMA. He's going to be a serious competitor. I find it hard to believe that he's going to be knocked out or forced into submission by anyone. |

Jesus, why not just throw in Kimo and Dan Severn, too, if we're gonna bring out the retirement home regulars. |
