i've been reading threads about the evils of foreigners in korea ... changes in laws, lecherous foreigners trying to have sex with korean girls. the list goes on and on.
the simple truth is that neither side can take any moral high ground. while i agree that many foreign men want to come here and meet local girls, i believe that's one of the lures of migrating to any country.
if koreans are so pure, then the sex industry here wouldn't be worth 4% of the GDP. more than a million koreans (and foreigners in korea) work in the korean sex industry, an industry that's bigger and more profitable than thailand and the philippines.
most korean men i've met (most are well paid business men) have all admitted to having sex with hookers on their multitude of business trips. and this is a growing trend for koreans.
although this article is two years old, it highlights some interesting issues ... while education and tougher penalties are slowly discouraging western sex tourists, the number of asian (especially korean) sex tourists is on the rise ... thanks to the growing affluence and wealth in korean society.

More Koreans Buy Sex Abroad
November 2005
A civic group has urged the South Korean government to come up with countermeasures against an increasing number of Korean men participating in the overseas sex trade.
The Seoul-based Naeil Women's Center for Youth said Monday that Kim Young-ran, head of the center, and other participants in an international symposium described a couple of cases in which Korean men had sexual intercourse with underage prostitutes in other countries.
The center yesterday held an international symposium on the theme of "Conditions and Countermeasures to Overseas Child and Youth Sex Tourism by Korean Men" at Seoul Women's Plaza in Taebang-dong, southwestern Seoul.
According to the panel and the center, a Korean man operating a massage parlor with his masseuses in the Philippines was arrested on charges of prostitution in August 2004.
They faced criminal charges without bail as they violated the Republic Act (RA) 9208, Kim said.
An increasing number of Koreans buy sex in the Philippines, sometimes abusing prostitutes. The Philippine government has urged the Korean government to take firm action against soliciting prostitution, in particular buying sex from children.
The panel also pointed out that Cambodia is recently becoming popular with Korean tourists.
In 2004, the number of Korean travelers was 12.7 percent or 128,423, the largest number in the total tourist population visiting Cambodia.
There is a possibility that a mounting number of Korean tourists in Cambodia might contribute to boosting the sex industry and human trafficking, especially threatening children who are vulnerable to sexual exploitation. The panel said that children are sometimes coerced into the sex trade to earn money for their families.
They said Korean tourists are believed to abuse the unfortunate situation of Cambodian children living under the poverty line. The center said Korean travel agencies have joined the international effort to eradicate child prostitution across borders.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has offered educational programs for Korean tourists and agencies to prevent sex tourism in other countries.
The center has joined End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes (ECPAT) in 2004, which currently has 73 nongovernmental organizations in 67 countries worldwide.

koreans have terrible behaviour when they're abroad. and it's consistent with korean hypocrisy that they'd be so angry about foreign behaviour in their own country.
when koreans represent 12% of cambodia's tourism industry, that means a massive amount of money ... and i'll guarantee that a lot of it goes into the sex trade.
i have no problems with what koreans do, or how they behave. but i do have a problem when the noisy koreans shouting and yelling at a bar tell me to shut up because they think i'm a noisy foreigner.
... flame on! |

here's a more recent article where the government acknowledges the problem of koreans and foreign sex trades ... which they govt is trying to do something about.

South Korea gets tough on sex tourism
September 20, 2007 - 2:39PM
South Korea Wednesday announced a crackdown on its nationals evading the country's tough anti-prostitution law by buying sex abroad instead.
The government will revise the law so that its citizens caught buying sex in foreign countries will have their passports confiscated, the gender equality ministry, the justice ministry and the foreign ministry said in a joint press briefing.
An inter-ministerial team has also been formed to clamp down on brokers who help South Korean girls obtain visas to sell sex abroad and travel agents who arrange sex tours for South Korean men, they said.
"The government agencies share the view that the country's image is being damaged greatly by the purchase of sex (by South Korean travellers) in overseas countries and decided to step up crackdowns on sex trafficking here and abroad as well," they said.
South Korea brought in a tough anti-prostitution law in 2004, punishing clients with fines and throwing pimps in prison.
Last year alone, courts prosecuted 35,000 clients, 2.5 times higher than the number of those who were caught buying sex in 2003.
Incidents of South Koreans caught up in the foreign sex trade are increasing sharply, Yonhap news agency said.
The latest government initiative followed a local TV report last week about South Korean high school students allegedly buying sex while they were on field trips to China.
The MBC TV network showed South Korean teenagers venturing into a massage parlour in China. Some said it was common practice. |

I wasn't aware of many of those stats, Superdave, so cool thread.
Indeed, how dare a Korean girl have consensual and non-cheating sex with a white guy yet those phlegm-horking, boshintang-guzzling Korean guys purchase extra-marital sex on a pretty much cultural, habitual basis? |

Just last week, or two weeks ago, a judge let off a step-father for fondling his step-daughters breasts in her bed after he came home drunk. The judge ruled that touching of the breasts, in bed, constituted a "sign of affection," not sexual advances.
So from now on, I don't shake girls' hands, I honk their boobs. |

You argue like an apologist. Because someone does something, it makes it okay for someone else to do something else.
Argue the point at hand. Has this or has this not been done many times already?

well, my point is not actually to attack korean culture, but to point out that koreans and foreigners behave exactly the same way when they travel.
we're not better than koreans, nor are koreans better than us. but a lot of time is spent belittling the other cultures.
perhaps western culture is moving away from things like the sex trade ... but heaven knows we did our best to exploit third world countries ... and we still do it.
now korea's doing it ...
i don't think either side can claim any superiority. |

If the sex industry is under 15% of the economy, then I'm a 1-legged parrot. By Korean accounting it's 4%. |

true. but at a conservative 4%, that's still a staggeringly amount of money! |

I have a problem with Koreans' behavior when it involves child molestation. I also have a problem with their behavior when it involves some bigoted moron getting in my face and demanding that I not speak English or move away from him just because I'm a foreigner. |

Thanks for that. I'm sure I'm not alone in admiring your 'call a spade a spade' worldview. |
