|
|
A recruiter guy I knew from way back when got in contact with me to brag that he wasn't having a hard time finding qualified teachers to work in Korea.
He even showed me a picture of a guy he just hired to work for a kindy in Jeonju
Ummm......
I asked him if he thought there was anything seemingly "wrong" with this candidate.
He told me other than the apparent slur in his speech, he seemed like the perfect candidate- no criminal record, graduated with a BA in general studies with valid transcripts and reference letters from his professors, in perfect health and lives near an embassy to have a visa interview...everything a school could hope for in a morally respectable teacher....
Am I the only one who can see this going completely wrong?

I have two nephews with Down: one is severe - affecting his speech, physical appearance and IQ. The other is mild - only affecting his physical appearance. He can run, jump, swim, talk, learn, etc.
However, it was my impression that most schools hire "attractive" people. |

He may very well be able to teach kindergarten. We don't know. If so, good for him. But I agree, it's not cool to have that pic posted. |

It is very uncool to have that pic up. People with downs may have the ability to properly function in society, just at a lower level.
Take the pic down. Don't be a jerk. |

Oh man... ha, ha... Christ. I dunno, man. This is the best laugh I've had all day, but it's probably wrong. |

I can't lecture you on this being wrong, given that I just snorted up my coke. |

Why is it funny? A chromosome defect isn't funny. Could have been you and might be your kid. |

I have often thought that blind people could teach ESL very well, and if in public schools then they'd have co-teachers for discipline issues anyways. I'd even say that a blind person could - on average - start out with an advantage in terms of this profession, given the sort of experience they bring to it. If you see what I mean.
I also think that deaf people could teach English, though in this case with a definite challenge, regarding teaching pronunciation to beginners.
A mute person, who never utters a word but can hear and see, would make for an awesome teacher. Especially by the CELTA method of ESL instruction where teachers are to shut up and become facilitators of language production in students.
A teacher with downs syndrome? Pre-ESL students of a kindergarten could work, but that person would need a serious friend to ensure that the hagwon director doesn't take advantage of the situation regarding pay, living and working conditions, treatment. Some of the hagwons have click-and-use computer lessons with exercise books that reduce the teacher's role to pushing buttons and handing out homework. |
