Doug Stanhope

Of course Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, and George Carlin.

Neil Hamburger is pretty funny

and not really standup but check out Longmont Potion Castle. I'd link to things but I'm lazy.

Ahem.

My two favorites are Ricky Gervais and Mitch Hedberg. http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=yaybDG3nWfg

I'll never understand why Bill Hicks is so popular. While I agree with most of his points, I've never found him funny.

^ Interesting. I find Bill Hicks to be my favorite comedian of all time... I've intro'd several people to him, and some of them say they don't find him funny either. Oh well.

The thing about Bill Hicks is that he wasn't a good comedian. He didn't tell jokes, like comedians are supposed to, he editorialized. The idea of a guy not telling jokes on a stage, who's supposed to be doing that, is either going to appeal to you are not. Bill was way too self righteous to be a good comic, but that's why I like him, and what sets him off from the graveyard that is comedy. I mean, listen to a show where Bill Hicks bombs and deals with hecklers. A good comedians calls out the heckler, turns the audience on them, and calls it a day. When Bill was heckled or the audience didn't like what he was doing he saw that as a call to arms. YOU, the audience, became the enemy, and to would spend the next hour telling you why you were the cause of the world's problems.

Okay, so I'm bored at work seat warmer and thinking about this too much

Bill was a fire and brimestone Texan preacher instead of a comedian, really.

I personally find it hilarious that he's a lot more popular in parts of the UK than in America.
