Elite School Exam Has Been Leaked for Over 5 years'
By Kang Shin-who
Staff Reporter
A lecturer of a famous cram school in Seoul has revealed entrance exams of seven elite schools have been leaked to cram schools for more than five years.
Many foreign language high schools in Gyeonggi Province as well as Seoul have built alliances with private institutes and provided their admission exam problems to them for more than five years, the lecturer said in an interview with Yonhap News Agency.
Citing names of seven foreign language schools as well as teachers of the schools, the lecturer said the schools have handed over entrance exam questions to cram schools. He said he had seen some of the leaked questions, adding that exam leakages are more frequent among newly established elite schools.
``There has been a symbiotic relationship between the two groups. Foreign language high schools could increase the number of applicants in order to win more fame by providing entrance exam questions, and cram schools could produce more successful applicants to the elite schools by letting their students apply for those schools that provide test questions,'' he said.
He said it costs from 5 to 10 million won for cram schools to get entrance exam questions and usually cram school teachers give cash to the elite school teachers in return for the questions, although in some cases brokers arrange the deal. The number of successful students to elite schools boosts the value of cram schools to the tune of billions of won, he added.
``I heard Gimpo Foreign Language High School received up to 100 million won, but it is too much, I guess it would be about 50 million won,'' he said.
Mentioning that many major cram schools annually advertise how many questions, which they claim they have created, are similar to those on the elite entrance exams, he said usually those cram schools don't convey exactly the same test questions to their students.
``In case of Gimpo high school, the cram school principal let their students know exactly the same questions and this is why their corruption was revealed. But it is a very rare case,'' he said.
