"Paul" is different but he's put in with the others so I ignore him at my peril. The first month he cried everyday. The second month he came to the table but did nothing. Lately he's learned recreational screaming but at least he's talking. Today, six months in, he showed the first sign of intellectual life. I usually make worksheets for everyone but sometimes I skip him because there's no point. I got busted doing that so I gave him some extra attention and it paid off finally. He get his own simple big lettered work sheets from now on.

In my past experience back home ... if I could think of any ONE thing that I thought might help you the most, would be to say that children with Autism respond well to and need - structure, but most importantly - to be able to visually SEE what that structure is.
For example ... I took photos of the child doing various things during the lesson. 1st - Putting bags away. 2nd - Sitting at desk. 3rd - Book out writing. 4th - Song time. 5th .. you get the idea. I would display this on a board close to where the child sits. IF there was ever any change in my schedule for his class .. then I would rearrange the order of the photos - or replace them with other ones.
At the beginning of every lesson, while all the other kids settled down, I spent a minute or two showing him the photos .. letting him look at them and work out what was going on.
It worked really well - it kept him settled in the classroom .. and it can even provide you with some photos for HIM to be able to communicate with you as to what HE would like to do on those occassions when he just wont do as you'd like.

Best of luck ... I hope this helps in some way.
