Please, seriously, I need your help. My wife's CPU and fan are dying. Also, a couple of her USB drives are failing. Basically, things are going to S@(t and I am going to have to reformat everything and replace a couple of parts. This leads me to my predicament. Should I just build her a cheap Internet functional PC, or........wait......here it comes.......GIVE HER MINE AND BUILD ANOTHER ONE?!?!? Shocked

Why bother even ask yourself the question.......we all know what will happen. Laughing

Anyway, your beast, if I remember right, is probably going towards the elephants graveyard by now. A PC is only hi-spec for a year tops.

I've already got half the parts I need for a P35 chipset combined with Quadcore cpu, DX10 graphics and eSata. All this stuff is is a big jump from anything 1.5 years ago.

well if you want a new pc.. then go for it..mix and match parts and make a new one for yourself..
I mean you're going to spend money anyway why not spend it on you.
and in the mean time, she gets a good pc which will last 5 years.. and you can fix yours up..

I needed a second one for my mrs.. and thought yeah mine is 5 years old
I will build my beast and give her mine.. she wasnt having it she hates 2nd hand goods hahahahahahaa so I built her one that would last 10 years! and mine is due for an upgrade! next year I think its monster time!

Before you give up on the old PC.

Strip it down, vacuum and dust the whole thing.

Use some canned air and alcohol and flush out all the connectors.

Put it back together, should extend the life a bit.

Build a beast, give her your dinosaur.

You can get a dang good one for under $2,000 if you build it yourself, and I know you will. I'd even like to help you, or at least watch you do it and learn something for my build.

Sounds like an over heating problem to me. Could be a faulty fan or simply, the system is very dirty inside. I have to clean mine many times or it overheats since there is a lot particulate in the air that likes to clump on on anything that has a fan. Luckily, my system warns me when it's not getting enough air and slows to a crawl to avoid over heating damage.

One time I had a fan go out on another system and it caused the hard disk to fail where it made a high pitched screech sound, lost all my data in a flash, and the system was only 1 year old. That hard disk should had lasted 5 years, but the fan failed causing it to mechanically fail.

CL,

Get your new RAM now. It's never been cheaper. I got 2 gigs of matched OCZ PC2-6400 for 59,000.

Buy the best DDR2 RAM you can now (and a P35 motherboard of course) so you can be pretty fast until you can afford DDR3 memory.

ive been lucky with my pc... I built it back in 2002 and have had very little problems with it..
nothing has broken or needed replacing.. at times I feel a melt down..
I take the parts out and clean them and put them back in, they are right as rain after that..

The day after I finish grading this semester I'm buying getting a new rig and assembling it. (first time to assemble myself - getting help here from demophobe)

The pc I'm currently using is driving me nuts. Over the last 2-3 months I've almost taken a sledgehammer to it a couple of times a week.

Are you going to go with the E6750 or the Q6600 or did you plan to go with AMD this time?

Just curious?

Here's what my new rig should look like........I shall be forcing my long suffering wife to order most of this tonight........ Very Happy

Intel Q6600......(or an E6750 for 171,000. Can't decide!).....240,000
Zalman CPU cooler............................................................50,000
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R ...................................................125,000
8800 GT (probably XFX, when they finally arrive in Korea!)..290,000
Western Digital 500GB......................................................109,000
OCZ PC2-6400 RAM............................................................60,000
Enermax EG495P (power supply).......................................104,000
Gigabyte case with two fans.................................................70,000
LG DVD writer.....................................................................40,000

Just over a million won.....1,080,000

I could save 70,000 by getting an E6750 CPU instead of the Q6600. I still might do that. The E6750 is fantastic value in Korea at 171,000. That's even cheaper than what Newegg.com sells it for in the States.

I could also save over 100,000 by getting a mid-range graphics card. I'm undecided if I'm actually really into computer games. I might be.

Vista Ultimate is quite nice after you have turned off some of the annoying security features. I've been running Ultimate for 9 months now. Very stable and secure. And free!!!! Demonoid R.I.P.

If you're not sure about the games, I'd get a 7600GT or an X1650. They can be had for under 100,000 or so and are solid cards. If you decide to upgrade later for DX10 games with more punch, you won't be out as much money.
