When you're not re-signing with your school, how do they determine how much money to give you for your one way ticket back "home"? Can you just say that you're going to Africa or Europe or South America? If they want to see a boarding pass or reservation, have you, or anyone you know, cancelled the ticket and pocketed the money?
I read the contract with GEPIK and it states: "6.If Employee completes the Term of Employment without the intention to renew and leaves Korea within 10 days from the expiration date, Employer shall pay the airfare for Employees one way return flight." |

I was under the assumption that they purchased the ticket for you. My hogwan director did this.
Then again.. I guess it varies from place to place. I'm in a public school now too so I'd like to know the answer as well... |

According to GEPIK, you DO NOT GET YOUR AIRFARE REIMBURSED IF YOU END YOUR CONTRACT.
You get the 1 way ticket, or you don't get anything. I even e-mailed Dain Bae about it and she said you only get reimbursed if you RENEW and decide NOT to go.
If anyone else knows differently, then please give me something in writing so I can tell the powers that be in GEPIK they are wrong. I seriously doubt "Well, I read on Dave's that this one guy got his airfare reimbursed" will cut it. |

Can't speak for Gepik.
But, I'm in the Epik program and I did buy my ticket.
I got reimbursed just showed my reciept to my admin.
but, it's Korea so dunno if it will apply to all schools. I have a good relationship here so that helps a lot to get things I want.

Yeah my school took my receipt and ticket stub and what-not for my flight, paid me the money into my account a couple weeks later. I'm in EPIK. In SMOE, we had the option of arranging a flight through Korean Air and having SMOE pay for it directly.
I asked about what you could do about possibly going to another country, and from what I'm told by the district office it's OK as long as your flight ticket to the new destination is cheaper than one going home. I was considering jaunting down to Indodesia for a peek around during the summer, but if those new E2 policies go down... |

There should be no problem with this if it is the government.
They determine how much to pay you by their "book" which outlines how much the govt will pay -- for everything from a pencil to a PC (I forget the Korean name of the costing book). They have guidelines and will pay a certain rate depending on the distance to your home city.
You can get that in cash or as a ticket, so long as it is due/owed. You might need to buy a ticket and cancel, some schools as you to do that but there is no requirement you use the ticket. You are owed that and can use it as you see fit. That is the case at SMOE in any case - I know several people who through their district received cash for their unused airline ticket.
