|
|
I'm rounding the end of my first contract at a hagwon in Incheon. I want to move to Seoul and I've been advised that public school positions are much more enjoyable. Through Dave's I've sent some emails asking if I could get a placement on the west side of Seoul but I got a reply saying that they would only tell me where I'd be going once I arrived for my orientation. I remember this being the case when I was looking into jobs when I applied last year.
I really don't want to end up on the east side as it's far from my friends in Incheon, my BJJ gym, my girlfriend, etc. So I'm wondering is there anyway I could go to a school in person and apply and that way get myself guranteed for a location? Or is this just a pipe dream? |

Pipe dream. Some publics in Bucheon, not Seoul, might advertise separately though. Keep your eye on the job boards, I know I've seen public schools advertise for their NET independently, at least in Gyeonggi. Never seen it in Seoul.
However, Gangseo-gu, in west Seoul, seems to have a LOT of SMOE positions. Unfortunately, so does Gangdong-gu in the east.
Not every public school, or even "gu," in Seoul employs an NET. |

The ONLY chance you would have would be a direct hire by the school.
Start shopping recruiters or hit the bricks and hand out resumes in person to schools in the area you wish to work in. (make sure your resume and cover letter are bilingual (Korean/English)).

nope but if you already have your own place SMOE do at least try to place you somewhere within reasonable distance to where you live (well....this from personal experience and it worked out).....if you don't have your own accommodation it's just pot luck where you're placed. |

I don't SMOE public schools can override the school board to handpick their teacher. I know that schools often have a list of preferences that they give to the school board. His best bet would be a private elementary school in the area you want. |

I can answer your question (i know from experience).
Only 2 or 3 months ago, i saw a job advert on this website. It was for a Public School in central Seoul. It was advertised by a recruiter.
So i applied, had the face to face interview (it helps being in Korea), and got the job.
So it can be done. Good luck. |

As another poster mentioned... if you already have an apartment, you can tell them where it is, and hope that they place you close to it. By close, I mean at most you'd have an hour commute. Close for Seoul. But I don't think they'd put you in Gangdong-gu if you like in Gangseo-gu.
From personal experience, this worked out for me, and also for a friend of mine. |
