It used to be that your Guarantor had to be a professional of some sort.
The new policy as of October 1st, states:
Quote: |
Under the new policy effective today, an eligible guarantor must:
* Be a Canadian citizen 18 years of age or older;
* Hold a five-year Canadian passport that is valid or has been expired for no more than one year;
* Have been 16 years of age or older when they applied for their own passport; and
* Have known the applicant personally for at least two years.

Now that's MUCH easier. The Embassy in Seoul's website definition of the Guarantor has not been updated yet. Once I heard back, I'll update here.

REALLLLLY.... I just applied applied for a passport for my son today, and paid extra money to have a guarantor in lieu of. It would have been nice if their information on the Canadian Embassy Website was up to date. Oh well. |

Question is, does the guarantor still have to be a doctor, dentist, lawyer, etc?
""Canada's New Government is taking positive action to improve passport services for Canadians. And unlike the previous government, we are delivering results. In only a few months, we have increased Passport Canada's capacity by 40%, we have launched the simplified passport renewal process and we are announcing today the new guarantor policy," said the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs.""
Apparently so...
Oh, and "unlike the previous government, we are delivering results"? If only he hadn't said that. Now, I feel like they are trying to bribe us. |

Did you read the OP? The guarantor can be almost anyone now.
I wish this law had been in effect before. I know many people who fit this description. But I ended up paying an extra 40,000 won.

Compared to the people handling social services back home, they're almost pornographically friendly |

I was interested in that policy change too, since I also had to renew my passport. Apparently it only applies to Canadians currently living in Canada or the US (see bold section).

Thank you for your message of October 3, 2007.
On October 1, 2007, Passport Canada introduced a new guarantor policy,
which allows most Canadian adult passport holders residing in Canada
or the United States to act as guarantors for applicants who are not
eligible for the simplified passport renewal process or who submit a
passport application for the first time.
Please note that this new guarantor policy applies to Canadians
residing in Canada or in the USA submitting an adult or a child
passport application.
You may find more details on the following website:
www.pptc.gc.ca/newsroom/news.aspx?lang=e&page=/newsroom/20070608d.aspx
If you are using the previous forms PPTC 044, PPTC 046, PPTC 140 or
PPTC 142, you must fill out the guarantor section according to the old
policy on occupational guarantors.
We trust this information is of assistance to you. |

from what I understand that new policy only applies while you are in Canada, if you are overseas nothing has changed. |

On the passport application theres details about getting a guarantor for the photo. The back of the photo is also stamped with the address of the photo studio and such.
I"ve asked a bunch of koreans and they all said they don't do taht here.
Anyone else get their photo stamped?
SHould I just go to that photo studio recommended by the Canadian Embassy on the website? |

There are a couple of places by the old embassy that do them to the embassy specs. Olive young (across the street from the old embassy) and I'll have to get you the directions for the other shop (they are at home) and post them later.
