So I bought this computer from Dave's about two months ago. Worked like a dream, but I wasn't happy with the Geforce 6600LE that came in the box so I went out and bought a Geforce 8600GT.

Low and behold, the $100 I spent on the GT was well worth it. I was able to run the newest games at the highest resolution with settings turned relatively high (decent framerates with maximum settings for Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, and Timeshift and medium-high settings for Crysis).

About two weeks after I put the 8600 GT in, though, everything went downhill. I'm not exactly sure why.

First off, the system began running slowly. The HD is always spinning. I cleared up startups in msconfig, I've ran full scans with Adaware and a few other virus programs (AVG and Microsoft's Windows Live One) and turned up nothing. My internet connection is slowly going down the drain, with my ingame pings dropping from 15-30 to 200 or so (Battlefeild 2142). The internet problem is not local however, its affecting my room mate as well so it might be another issue altogether.

Games are running a lot slower too. I had to turn the settings in BF all the way down just so it was playable, other games seem to be choking up significantly as well. This might have something to do with the fact that the hard drive always seems to be spinning ever so slightly, there must be something running in the background I'm not able to see / detect.

What is a good scanner for detecting Korean viruses?

Anyway, my stats are:

Mainboard: Micro-star International Co., LTD MS7125 // ISA PCI PCIe IMB USB FireWire/1394 i2c/SMBus
1x AMD Athon 64 Processor 3200+ running at 2.01 GHz
Nvidia GeForce 8600GT
(NTFS) ST3160812AS (ATA) HD 149GB
1GB DDR-SDRAM

I'm planning on upgrading the RAM and CPU soon too... My CPU is a little dated. I want to know whats causing the problems first however.

Any help would be appreciated.

Scan the HDD for bad sectors. If the HDD is flailing (constantly seeking) it may be trying to read and is unable to because of a bad sector(s).

What is the power supply size? Your system may now be underpowered with the new video card. Low voltage can cause all sorts of problems, especially with a power hungry video card operating at high performance levels. Try swapping your video card back and see if your problem goes away. If it does, then look at a new power supply or bad video card.

Slow and sluggish is also a sympton of an overheating CPU. Many of the newer ones get throttled back when they get hot. Is your box on the floor with the ondol turned on?

Nope, she's got 60GB left. Most people would say 150GB is small, but I have a terrible time filling it up. If I got rid of everything I no longer wanted I'd be able to clear out 40 or so GB.

I'm defraging it right now, do you think that will help?

As for the power supply... I haven't bought/installed one in years. Are they motherboard dependent or generic? I might add power supply to my list when I upgrade (+1 GB Ram, new CPU and new power supply).

Maybe I should just get a whole new motherboard?

TT hit the nail on the head. The above mentioned would be what I would look at first.
