i saw it, and really, at this point, i couldn't have cared less if this movie were 100% mo-cap and CG or real live filming with CG'd effects. acting was decent, facial expressions were decent, and the only actual issue was eye movement (which i only bothered to notice once) and 'background' characters that basically had the same fluidity as reboot circa 1994 because not enough attention was paid to them...

highlights of the movie were both fights involving Grendel and the dragon chase/fight (that about covers the entire thing, really).

the dragon chase scene was by far the best dragon scene in any movie i can recall that had a dragon in it...

i'm really curious as to how well this movie will do at the box office here in the Korea, seeing as how i know there's a sorta pseudo-stigma against these types of movies (see: Titanic) but i imagine this movie may have a far better (i.e. existent) ad campaign going for it. the actors involved may be relatively better known here, too. considering it had an estimated budget of $150 million, i feel how well this movie does here will either encourage or discourage intellectual properties (namely Daves' users/movie goers) from going a more appropriate CG route... Wink

only time will tell... Laughing

The reason people here didn't go see Titanic was because the whole economy was in the tank and it was a patriotic thing to not do, ie, keep the money in the country. Note for reference: that was also the time there was a national movement not to push the 'close' button on elevators in order to save that much electricity.

(I didn't make either of those up.)

I agree with you that there was a push not to see Titanic (HS principals had assemblys saying that it would hurt the economy - there was even a rumor that Leonardo Di Caprio said Korean women were ugly to drive people away from the movie) and it was a xenophobic issue, but a lot of people did see the movie. Four point five million and it earned $20,700,000.

The survey is somewhat out of date and I'm sure there have been a few other Korean blockbusters since then, but I remember reading that the audience for King and Clown was comparable.

That was also the time when the government was encouraging people to turn in their gold to help the economy out. All that did was casue the price of gold to bottom out.

Hold on there. Im not Korean. I refused to go see Titanic. Why? It was a SHIT movie and also I wasnt a mindless 14 year old girl at the time. I have since see it on TV. I was happy to learn that my intuition was right and I saved the 10 bucks. The movie stank. One of the worst Ive ever seen. Why it was so popular, I have no idea...it should have been straight to video..or worse.

I saw Beowulf today at Imax. I had very very low expectations, and was consequently delighted. The effects were spectacular. It's a good romp-- go see it!

I saw the movie this evening. I thought the CG was really annoying; it was too realistic to be cartoonish but too cartoonish not to be distracting.

The script wasn't amazing but it wasn't terrible. I had higher expectations from Neil Gaiman, though.

Haha, funny experience with that 'uncanny valley' thing when my wife and I were driving to Incheon airport. At a construction zone near the freeway they had a mechanical mannequin dressed up in construction worker's garb and its arm was swinging one of those caution flags. From 100 meters away it looked real, but when we passed it and saw it was a mannequin it gave both of us an cold wave of the creeps. Same thing, I reckon.

Anyways, back on topic- I read Beowulf in my Old English class in uni and it was pretty hard.
