Town meeting for foreigners set for Friday

Seoul City yesterday invited foreign residents to a town meeting tomorrow to discuss the difficulties they have had and make suggestions for better administration.

The biannual meeting, which had been annual until last year, will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday at Taepyeong Hall on the third floor of City Hall building in central Seoul.

Foreigners wishing to take part are asked to notify the Seoul Help Center on the second floor of the City Hall before Friday noon. They can register online at shc.seoul. go.kr or call (02) 731-6800.

The ninth Seoul town meeting will focus on schooling for expat children, access to public services for foreign residents, policies for immigrants married to Koreans and cross-cultural programs. The topics were chosen based on survey results.

Inquiries on other issues of interest such as medical insurance, national pension, immigration services, banking, websites and parking will also be answered by city officials during a session for general issues and questions.

Starting with greetings by vice mayor Kim Heung-kwon and a representative of the Foreign Investors Advisory Council of Seoul, the town meeting will consist of a follow-up on the previous meeting in April and three sessions for presentations and discussions.

The number of foreign residents in Seoul was 175,000 last year, up 35 percent from 2005. The municipal government expects the expat population to reach 300,000 or 3 percent of the city's total population by 2012.

What a crappy time. This keeps out all public school teachers. Sparkling.

Will someone please bring up the fact that the police don't do jack for foreigners here?

Sounds like it would keep the hakwon teachers out as well...not to mention any full-time workers.

I will be there but I'm sure anything I say will be quickly be quashed as the meeting(they say) will be mostly for those married to Koreans. I might get 1 question in if I'm lucky.

I agree with the question about the police but any Korean female could ask that question as they are usually ignored like we are when they cry rape.

They will tell me to take any issue up with whatever governmental organization my question/suggestion to improve/complaint is towards.

i emailed the woman (Anne Lanceuor) about the registration being closed, she emailed me back saying to just contact them and come.

well this is the response I got from them:

and this what i just sent back

Anne said to just email you and it would be fine. and
now you are telling me this?

this is piss poor planning on your part especially
with the misinformation out there about the new e2
visa requirements, people need to get decent
information and answers about not only this but the
problem with korean banks not issuing atm cards that
work outside of korea.

this is just another example of how korea is now
making much harder for foreigners to get along here

yup Korea Tinkling

Sorry, but banking is not on the list of things to be discussed that I remember. Three things that are...1. Immigration(mostly matters with those married to Koreans, 2. health, and 3. pension.

There are others but 2 of the 3 above is what I'll be prepared to ask about. I'm on my way there NOW!

Although true, this doesn't belong in an email correspondance, Rudy. At all.

I'm grateful for the intention, but I also really hope that this was not the original format of what you actually sent....
