They tell me it is for a check with Korean police, so they can be sure that I haven't committed any crimes in Korea. I told them this number would be useless for that and they just said, "It's nothing, all the teachers had to do this. (I'm the only foreigner at my school.)

Should I be worried? What do they want?

You sure it's your American SSN and not your ARC number? If it's your SSN just make one up Smile

Under no circumstances should you give out your SSN. You would be a fool if you did. This is a foreign country. No legal recourse if they decide to sell it in Thailand.

Exactly. Just transcribe a number incorrectly.

the thing your ssn is for is social security, since korean bosses can't do anything with social security there is no reason for them to have it. i hope they are just being stupid and asking for the wrong thing not that they are actually scamming you, but ya refuse to give it to them and see if they vanish or realize their mistake.

Hey...

Everyone here is right.....never give ANYONE in Korea your SSN......
If they want to check your background in Korea, your ARC number is sufficient........tell them if they want your SSN, they need to get permission from the embassy to obtain it, I am serious.......and they need to show you something in writing why they need it and what they are going to use it for.....Because even in the US, an employer will have a person sign a disclaimer as to why they are collecting that kind of information AND how they intend to use it......

There is absolutely no reason for you or anyone to give Koreans your SSN...

I blame the US for designating a person Social Security pension number as their ID number, which was not its original purpose......

Also if you are going to give them a fake one, use one with "000" as the first 3 numbers, as it denoted an American born abroad and more difficult to trace.

Tell them you'll never give out your SSN, but more importantly, how the hell could they find out if you did anything in Korea with your AMERICAN SSN? I'd tell them to go to hell.

I saw 3 different regional versions of a public school employment contract and all of them have a box for SSN a the bottom.

Is it routine for GEPIK/EPIK to ask for SSN in the contract?
