I was talking to a friend's daughter the other day, a bright kid who is in year five at the nearby elementary school. When I asked her what she'd been studying, she replied "social studies". As a humanities student myself, I am keen to hear about these kinds of things, so I asked a few more questions about what they learned in that subject. She told me they studied 'exports', how Korea is making handphones, cars and semiconductors for the world. She then added that they were taught that this is how Korea will become an important, powerful and well-known country in the future. I'm kind of puzzled now and want to know if anybody has insight into what is taught in this subject. Is it really just boosterism and prediction, or was the kid exaggerating about the last part? Curious to find out.

I think social studies is meant to be a mix of culture and history study.

when i was that age i remeber feeling terrible that all foreigners weren't american because american was the best. i actually thought that they spent most of their time crying because they lived in another country. im starting to wonder whether this didn't come from one of my teachers, or textbooks.
