Hi,
My first post here Could some of you who have been here a while and have had winter camps before help me out.
Is it just regular class time e.g 45 minutes long ?
When do they start roughly ( i mean the date ) ?
Are they big classes or small ?
Do you get paid extra money for it ?
I have asked my bosses about it but they are a bit vague coming up with the dates and so on and i want to plan a vacation for January sometime. Seems not many of the Teachers know the dates of vacation.
I know the hours that i'll be working.
Thanks. |

All of those decisions are made by your school admin, so you just gotta wait it out until they figure them out, or feel like telling you.
I teach 3rd and 4th for a week each in the winter. I teach until 12:10-12:30 and am then done and on my way home. My last camp was less then half the size of a normal class. No extra money if the camp is for the public school you work for day to day, but if you do an away camp you will get paid extra money for that.
EDIT: I teach from 9:15-9:30 to 12:15-12:30. I don't usually give breaks, because we're doing more projects, larger activities, etc. |

Tell them tey have to tell you ASAP about what your vacation dates are. Most of the air tickets are probably already reserved at this point. You have to know. Remind them that its fine if they don't have all the details worked out about htecamp, but you ahve to have some dates within teh next week. |

Find out if the students are paying money to the school. If they pay you should get paid. |

in some ways i was lucky this year. My coteacher and i decided our week off will be in December (the week of Christmas) and we decided (well i decided really!) back in late september. I was able to book and purchase my plane ticket (to paris!) then just as the early bird specials came out...so i got a decent price on it and am able to plan my vacation.
Luckily also i dont have to go away for winter camp. and i have no clue what i'm doing for the camp in the school as my coteacher will be leaving for some extra english camp for herself! |

Not completely true. Someone asked about this at the GEPIK orientation in September and Daine Bae said that if the kids pay, the money is supposed to be used in a "general English fund." According to her the teacher is not supposed to receive any additional money from a paid camp, unless of course it's run at one of the university camps that GEPIK contracts out |

It never hurts to ask like Marlow said. Plus, especially with GEPIK, your school may or may not follow/deviate from the MOE rules. If you're well liked and in a good spot with good admin., then that money could be given to you despite the "rule". |

general English fund. hilarious. i've had to buy books, games, other supplies, like markers, for my classes, and i have yet to see any money from this fabled fund. i come with receipts in hand, and they just tell me they have no money. |

OP, who are you working for? Is it a school camp or district camp where you sleep away from home? All of this affects the answers to your questions.
If you are working for a public school, these questions should be able to be answered by your school, by your district or veteran teachers in your system. |

Thanks for the replies. Well i got the info i needed as such.
Turns out i will do 2 week camp at school. I wont recieve extra money for it, however i was told by another teacher that the kids will pay for the camp but when i asked my boss he said no they won't and therefore no monies will come to me. Who knows?
Having served my time in hakwon penitentiary for one year and having encountered the various schemes i have little faith.
Anyways it's a pretty cool gig i guess 4 hours teaching then home. |

Should, from the teacher's perspective. Of course, it appears GEPIK is running their program like a bunch of shits. The money is going to other teachers in the form of dinners, nicer computers, school trips, etc. I guarantee it.
Anyway, I'm getting paid very well this winter, and it's at my school. The day they change this is the day they are welcome to find a better teacher. |

But whether it will be "4 hours teaching then home" will really depend on your school ... Strictly under the contract we are expected to work normal days in vacation times ... except for our leave days ... But some people are allowed to leave early ... but it is not a right ... and probably better not to expect it ... and be happy if it does happen ... then be upset ... if it doesn't ... Being allowed to leave early is definitely NOT universal ... I know of other people who like me ... were not lucky enough to be allowed to leave early (other than rare days) during summer vacation ... and I would expect winter to be just the same ...

I made a point to my co-teacher a few weeks ago to let me go home early since I was the only teacher who had to stay during the summer, and there really isn't anything for me to do once the class ends at 12 or 12:30. I haven't heard back from her, but I'm not expecting anything to change. |

definitely DO NOT expect to be leaving early after your camps. your situation will depend entirely on your school and principal. some ppl have awesome schools where they don't mind u going home a couple hours early, and others insist on u completing yr full working hours regardless of there being anyone around.
on a side note, if you're a woman, i suggest u locking yr office door during the camp season. one of my co-teachers was very adamant that i should lock the door after the kids left (and the whole school was empty, save for 2 teachers down a few floors) |
