An "urban legend" I've heard continuously in Korea is that Immigration offers a reward for information leading to the arrest of a foreigner engaged in immigration violations (such as illegal private teaching).

I've heard the reward amount was from 1 to 4 million won depending on who was talking.

However, there is no mention of this on the Korean Department of Justice website (at least the English pages).

Can anyone provide an actual reference to this? Or is it simply BS?

Do you really want to do that? If you really want a challenge, go find a Korean breaking a law and turn them in! I can't see Immigration giving you/foreigner any money. But, if you really want to be a jerk, then go ahead and try. Let us know how much you get(NOT) and how much trouble you put the foreigner through.

You won't get any reward. It's all BS.

Turn them in, anyway, if they deserve it.

You will get three possible rewards for narcing someone out

1- A swift kick in the teeth if they find out it was you.

2- The satisfaction of knowing you screwed over someone you didn't like.

3- Extra work covering their classes if you're working with them

But you probably won't get any money for it.

Immigration doesn't pay bounties to anyone, foreign or Korean, for snitching. The Daejeon Hagwon Association continues to do so, I believe, but Immigration does not.

Um, you're making some spurious assumptions about the intention of my post there, dude.

Surely they have to prove you were teaching illegally/ money changed hands?

At this rate you could be accused of illegal teaching simply by regualrly visiting korean friends.

The onus is on the accused to prove innocence. You're not in Kansas anymore.

The purpose of my post is to find out if the rumors are true or not, because I'm hearing 5 different stories from 5 different people. That way, if someone asks me, I'll be able to provide a better answer than the local rumor mill.

So far, I haven't seen any evidence that the "bounty rumor" has any credence at all. This means 4 of the 5 aforementioned stories are likely to be BS.

What Tompatz says is true. Due process here is different. If they really got it in for you, and there's somebody ratted you out, the case they need to make to 'prove' it is pretty lightweight.
As to whether they got paid for ratting you out or not...I'd guess, 'not.'
If there was a reward for ratting people out, I figure I'd have heard about it by now if it was true. Sure, I heard that rumor some years ago, but have never yet heard of anyone actually been convicted by it. I've heard of hagwon owners ratting out private teachers, and the odd waygukin (or ex) ratting out an enemy out of spite, but never has anyone got paid, so far as I know.
But if there was a reward, probably this inbred little pirrhana tank of a community we have here would have chewed its own legs off ages ago. And don't get me wrong, I'm sure immie would love to do it--they just don't have the thousand-bucks-a-head on hand to reward the ten thousand rats who would no doubt pop out of the woodwork. They quite simply don't have the coin.

When I first arrived, there were rumors of 5 million won rewards for turning in North Koreans spies. Me thinks you have merely heard a bastardization of that.

Yeah, you can still see those stickers on the subway with the NIS (National Intelligence Service) emblem on them. I think there are 3 rewards based on what kind of spy you're turning in.

Now what would be the reward for an expat teaching English AND spying for the Norks?

The police have it pretty good with this. How do you prove you didn't do something?
