Hi!
I'm wondering what people's opinions are on this...
My ideal is to land a university gig in Korea but a) I have no masters and b) I have no teaching experience.
I'm going to be getting my CELTA in January and I'm just wondering if doing a three-month contract with Westgate in Japan would be enough to get a uni job.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
P.S. Yes, I know there are a ton of threads about Westgate in the International forum. |

No, it certainly won't.
And if you've researched Westgate it might be reasonably asked why you'd take a job w/those *beeps*. |

Okay, thanks.
I didn't really like the sound of Westgate, for the record.....It was just the allure of it being short-term and potentially helpful in getting into a university faster. |

Westgate is very competitive.
I had a bachelor's, good references and teaching experience and couldn't get in the door.
Don't forget all of the recent NOVA bankruptcy and lay-offs there, some 3-5,000 extra teachers currently overheating the job market there.
Definitely get a CELTA and/or masters. |

do the master's.
celta will make you a better classroom teacher.
but university profs / committees doing the hiring don't care about celta - they want to see a relevant master's.
that's cute that you asked if Westgate might give you a leg up on university positions! |

That's why you didn't get the job. Westgate, or NOVA, doesn't want experienced instructors who think for themselves. Thinking for yourself is dangerous in companies like NOVA or Westgate, GABBA, etc. In fact, I'd wager that if you had indicated that you had "No teaching expereince" but were "Willing to learn" you might have had a better shot at landing a job with them.

Yeah, curious to know what these people are doing - did they all get jobs, go home, come to Korea or Taiwan? That's a lot of people. Are there that many jobs available for 4,000 teachers at one time?

CELTA means nowt here. It would get you one point higher on the public school pay scales, but that's about it. Same goes for most of Asia. Guy I knew at a hakwan I once worked at had one and was on 2 mil, same as moi who had no CELTA.
MA in anything can get you in a uni job, if it is in English however or especially TEFL / Applied Linguistics, you might be able to cherry pick. |
