I love Costco. Don't you? In this overpriced land of bondegie and dried squid, it's kind of an oasis for me. I felt like I should share a little of my shopping experience with those of you who are not familiar with Costco. I enjoy reading Mindmetoo's threads like this, so I thought I'd make my own.
There are at least two Costco locations in Seoul, if you care to become a member. More information can be found here: http://www.costco.co.kr/eng/whs_850.htm
And now, for some photos:
Here's a look as you travel downstairs. You can see the meat section and alcohol a plenty.
One of the greatest things about Costco is the cheese. There's lots of cheese, and it's the real stuff: Colby Jack, Cheddar, Pepper Jack, Brie, and the list goes on...
If you like large cardboard-like Western pizzas, you'll find 'em here. The look like a piece of cardboard with cheese, and taste much the same.
Do you like honey? I mean REAL honey? Not the watered-down Korean kind? You can find it here.
How about beef jerky? I bought some, and wish I had gotten smoked jerky.
A friend of mine got me hooked on these crackers.
Do you like ActII popcorn? It's really cheap here.
I put this up for the Canadians. Sorry it's not Kraft!
One of my personal favorites -- Eggo Waffles! If you look closely, you will see me naked. (just kidding)
These Quaker Oatmeal packets make for a nice, quick, hot breakfast.
I saw this big Santa, and thought he looked kind of cool. They have a nice selection of plastic trees, and some really nice balls to decorate your tree with (or Santa, if you feel he needs some colorful balls).
Is this a good price for I-pods? I see they also had the shuffle for like 80,000 won.
What better way to check your boss's counting ability when he pays you under-the-table in cash?
If you've ever tried to purchase vitamins in Korea, you know how great a deal this is!
Calcium pills are also available for cheap, as are various other health pills.
Even dog food is dirt-cheap. They have some for smaller dogs, too.
Need an HP printer? They have several models to choose from, including some better ones with scanners. This one is almost cheaper than buying refill ink.
Do you need a Sony stereo system for your apartment? Not too shabby.
Or maybe you're looking to add 5.1 channel surround sound to your system.
You can buy a new TV cheaper than what people try to sell them for used on here.
How about a GPS for your car? These are two popular Korean models. I own the G1, and love it.
Check out this Italian leather sofa. Look familiar?
Best deal I've seen anywhere on a front-loader.
I bet the same fridge would be twice as much at one of those appliance boutique stores down the street.
And lastly, a thick, juicy Aussie steak, which costs a whole lot cheaper than Korean meat! MMmmm! |

I like costco, too.
Do you remember how much the clock radio costs? |

Oh, FFS!! Where are the 2kg bags of pistachios?!
I was well disappointed with Costco, by the way. I was expecting much better. I had dreams of aisles and aisles of different varieties of beans and breakfast cereal and... er... well, that's all I really wanted. |

Sorry, I didn't get the price on the clock radio. Was it a radio, too?
They had these cool little 2-sets of Duracell emergency flashlight radios that were rechargeable and used LEDs for light. I wanted to buy those, but already have an emergency flashlight radio.
There were some cereals, but not a lot. |

The last time I went to Costco was in the morning a few days before Chuseok. Boy was that a mistake. I've never seen it so crammed. But, all that meat I bought, it just ran out last week. Costco's good for the meat refill. And the chicken/bulgogi bakes. |

I like threads like this, too. We need more of this kind of thing and a LOT less of the whining.
Has anyone tried the Annie's Mac & Cheese? I was tempted but I wasn't familiar with the brand and didn't want a truckload of the stuff if it isn't any good.
Why oh why did Costco stop carrying GREEN BEANS? |

Agreed.... have learned to go during off-peak times. Thursday evening around 7pm seems to be a decent time. |

Ha!
Also, according to yesterday's reconnaissance reports I've been receiving in preparation for today's "Business Customers Only" Tuesday Mornings raid, they're sold out of mixed vegetables, string beans, certain types of cheese, whole categories of home furnishings/furniture that I wouldn't have thought were "seasonal" but apparently Costco does, and God only knows what else.
Honestly, if Costco has gone so native that they're managing their inventories with no more rhyme, reason or reliability than any goddamn Korean outlet, then maybe it's time they packed up and went home. Or changed their name to "Kostco".
Okay, they're not really that bad. Just wanted to out-whine you and bash the uppity natives with my riding crop for no good reason. Truth be told, it would be a pity to no longer see those silly bumpkins in the food court scurrying back & forth, back & forth to the onion grinder to make that gawdawful ketchup-mustard-sweet relish-grated onion "banchan" they love so much.

Yes, I bought a 15-packet case of that for our "Eat Like a North American" Week festivities, but that was 2 months ago and we're still a good 6 boxes from the end. I don't really have any reference point, so go by what other posters say. Though bland by itself, I didn't find it offensive in any way. |

Great thread man - but your camera seems out of focus in places. |

Isn't there some law prohibiting the import of raw rice?
I remember hearing that some of these cheaper kimbab shops mixed imported cooked Chinese rice with their Korean rice.
This was in order to make profit on the 1,000원 kimbab.
My wife said to always ask for cham-chi, 참치-tuna, kimbab as they always make it fresh. It also tastes cool, but is often warm as it's made with fresh rice. |
