I am cursed this semester. My classes are awesome. Almost every single student even in my freshman classes. My more advanced (writing) classes are beyond awesome. I'm talking perfect attendance, awesome participation in class, amazing effort on their homework and amazing improvement. ALL OF THEM. My students go above and beyond in my classes. They try 10x harder than I did as a student. They're amazing.

AND IT SUCKS. I WISH I HAD LAZY USELESS STUDENTS.

Grading time is coming up and I have to follow the stupid "curve". I have to give students who deserve a solid A a B+. And I have to give students who deserve a solid A- a C+. Grading is going to freakin' kill me in a couple of weeks. Last year I worked at an 'average' University with a lot of lazy-ass students which made grading easy. I now work with 'perfect' students. Grading them is gonna suck (Even before I've seen their final.) This is THE worst part of my job.

These grades will change their future too. Getting an A or a B or a C is the difference between getting accepted to Korean Air or Asiana for the girls or Samsung or LG for the boys. What *I* decide will change their future. Poor kids =(

Then, after I've given their grades there is "Grade Correction Week". The week students can contest their grades with me. I prefer to call it "You're a bastard feel guilty you bastard" week. Whoever invented this week was a tool. It shouldn't exist. There should be no contesting of grades. It's going to ruin my Christmas I'm sure this year (Especially if it's a student I liked who got a low grade).

Is there anyone here who will be able to relieve my guilt after grading is done? (I'm not a Catholic but I'll take a Priest right now..) Please, can someone tell me that one of my A grade students deserved the B or C they'll undoubtedly get?

Idea Extra Credit! It should pull up their grades.

Why do you have to grade on a curve. Can't you adjust as you see fit?

You would have loved my bad students. They were the exact opposite of what you described and I happily failed many of them.

Hard to fight the system. I grade speaking tests and they used to give the kids a heads up on the questions. This year I insisted they didn't. The students had no idea what I was going to ask so they couldn't just memorize a speech.

I made up a list of about 20 questions that had to do with their last 3 units in the book. Grading was a breeze.

And yes my school insists on a curve. This many student get A's, B's etc. on the speaking tests.

I hated giving great students B's cuz they happened to be in a class with students that were really good.

Now with the new speaking test system the curve seems to happen naturally and very very little grade boosting or downgrading happens.

Because, at many universities, like mine, you can only give 25% As or 30% As. You can't just give out what you want.

I had that problem once.... the good ones, whom I greatly prefer, induce sleep.

Well at my uni, I seem to have to have the opposite problem. As in how many of them are going to b***c and complain when I give them an F.

You have issues at grading, I have issues all semester! I'd take your situation any day Smile

Whoever gives you a thicker envelope gets a better grade.

Happens sometimes.

At my university you can write a letter asking administration to make an exception.

Your students wish they had a better teacher

What exactly are you teaching them? How to write sentence fragments? No wonder they're doing so well, they don't even have to worry about subject-verb agreement!

Do you teach students the same "eye-dialect" as you seem to prefer, or are they instructed in standard written English? Lemme see now, 'gonna', 'wanna', 'hafta', 'useta' - dang man, I'm thinkin' you should be teachin' some American culture classes, not writin'.

Don't sweat it, university students study subjects other than English, and, believe it or not, not all of them want to become airline stewardesses and businessmen. Oh, and thank you for reminding me to let my students know that emoticons are now also used as punctuation marks Wink

Your absolutely right, students should just accept their marks. Tell me though, did you intend to write 'During this week,' or 'The weak'? If you meant 'the weak' you shouldn't have any trouble, watch out for those pesky Samsung or LG boys though, some of them are pretty strong. The "I'm sure" also seems rather misplaced.

You might want to consider a bottle of Scotch following "Grade Correction Week," and a remedial grammar prior to March 3rd.

Yeah I didn't realize I was writing an essay to be graded by this forum. If I had I probably wouldn't have used the "stream of consciousness rant" style of writing.

OP, it sounds like you should be discussing this with your Dean instead of the idiots on this board.
