Don't know if anybody else has posted about this. I'm putting it here to get the most readers, though some might argue that it could go in the Tech Forum.

From now through Nov. 26th, those of you with US or Canadian addresses can participate in the One Laptop Per Child Foundation's program to give a well-designed, fully functional XO laptop computer to a child in one of the three launch countries for the project (Uruguay, Peru, Ethiopia). By donating $399, a laptop will be sent to a child and another will sent to your address in the US or Canada.

For those of you from the rest of the world, I hope the opportunity to give and receive will be expanded, and soon. But, if you are feeling generous at the moment, it is possible to donate $200 directly and send a laptop to a child without receiving one for yourself.

The project is the brainchild of Nicholas Negroponte of MIT and is an attempt to increase educational opportunities for children around the world. We make a living out of education, and a pretty good one actually. I see this as a chance to give something back in relation to our own endeavors. I signed up last night for one computer through the give one, get one program, and am also donating 8 more separately.

You can go to this website for more information:

What teachers are saying

Before the laptop, the focus of the school curriculum and evaluation was to show what students don't know. Now, the focus is in what the student knows, and how this knowledge can be used as a support so they learn even more.

With the laptop we can say that our school is really elevated because the children are really learning more... They see themselves discovering things that they have never been doing before.

The bringing of the laptop into the school has brought a transformation into the school... It has brought another idea of how to teach better: now we see that teaching is not more abstract; it's something that pupils can see, and they catch on better.

Pupils go even beyond what I can teach in the class. It's a very interesting thing to use. I personally have a better idea about teaching... We discovered that giving them time to discover something and to do it in their own way, they feel more happy and they are so excited in using it that, Yes, I discovered it! Yes, I can get it!! Yes, I can do this on my own!!! Teaching is getting more interesting and less stressful.

Some children are naturally faster than the others; we discovered that they go ahead of the class. They can teach their mates that, Look I got it, this is how you do it, this is how you do it, this is how you do it. This way the slower children also are catching up. When the children can learn on their own, apart from what they can learn in class, they go faster above their mates in other places.

What children are saying

I want to thank the initiators because they brought the laptop to us. I'm really thanking them. I pray that God will give them more knowledge, and God also gives them more spirit of giving, so that they help us more, especially those children in junior classes that don't have it, so they could equally have it and have the knowledge.

I use my computer very carefully so that it will not spoil. I use it to type, I use it to write, I use it to draw, I use it to play games... I'm using my computer at home to type assignments.

I think the laptop is very good. It helps us to find some words, like our uncle [teacher] will teach us... The things we didn't know, we go check on the laptop.

I want to thank you people because you had given us the laptop and I love it so much. It's very good. Because you can see lots of things.

LINUX! The kids are going to be pretty pissed off when they can't install the latest MSN messenger.

On a more serious note I did read about this quite sometime ago and I think it is fantastic what they have done with this project, I'm no expert but from a design perspective the laptop looks near enough perfectly suited to its function.

This looks like a great idea. Christmas is just around the corner and a budget computer for my neice and nephew might be just what they need since my sister won't buy them one.

Thanks for posting this.

It's a donation to an impoverished child in a 3rd world nation, not your sister's spoiled brats who get too much as it is.l

Maybe they're running the web shopping software for the system on one and they forgot to turn the crank 1000 times?

I don't know what the problem is with their system. I got the same message when I attempted to pay, but clicked through it and, when I checked with my credit card company regarding the message, was told that the payment had registered.

We've had this discussion on another board, Geds, and you're right to point out the potential problem. I'll try to contact them somehow and see if it can't be fixed. I've found a donor service number (1-800-201-7144) and will try that and report back.

For the moment, here's an alternative way to order: call 1-877-705-2786. The 877 number is toll free if you call using Skype.

Now, based on the strength of customer/donator response to G1G1, OLPC has announced that the program will continue through December 31.
