When entering Australia yesterday, on the way back from my honeymoon, Ientered using my new e-passport.

Does anyone see the point of the way it is set up in Melbourne Airport?

You enter the "e-Passport" line, where there weren't any people waiting, give your passport to the immigration/customs official standing by the gate. they put your passport info page into the gate, it scans you, and then the biometric date on the chip in the passport, and if it matches, the barrier opens, and through you stroll.

It should be quick, but why is the customs person there, placing all of the passports on the gate, and taking a while to do it? the point is mean to be a quick self-service style entry to the country. I didn't notice on the way out, do we have an e-passport exit point as well? Remember, that the old style passports can't use the new e-passport gates!
