That show is all I ever watch on discovery I absolutely love it.
Plenty of bait.
Plenty of soak.
Plenty of crab.
Great documentary series but could you actually imagine working on one of those boats! I'd hate to be a greenhorn stuck at the cod grinding machine for an 18 hour shift! |

Yeah that show is great. Good $$$ , but brutal work on the deck for sure. Pay for deckhands seemed to average around $40,000 to $45,000 during the ophelia crab season just finished. Anyone know how long they were working for that season. |

Apparently you can get good money fishing salmon in the offseason (although not near as much as crabbing). Anyone else thinking if these visa restrictions get too tight it might be time to head for Alaska? |

And isn't there like at least one boat that sinks every season. And a couple people that die? ESL just seems a lot safer for somewhat comparable money per year. |

True, but they make that kind of money in one month. 40-50k is a good haul though, probably 20k is more typical, and if you have real bad luck you could end up with 10k. Still not bad for a month of work even as grueling as it is. |

The seasons are quota based, as far as I can tell. Like after X number of pounds of crab have been dropped off for processing, the season ends.
When they did the Alaskan King Crab season it lasted for about 14 days of fishing -- So they could be making 40k in 2 weeks.
Then they go do other things for the rest of the year. |

Been there, done that and have the scars to prove it. I've been on the Nortwestern and would to love to see English teachers fish. On second thought - "No!" (a green deckhand is more of a liability than an asset). When I watch the show I can smell and taste the vessel.
Three words come to mind: cold, wet, pain (and more pain)...LOL. |

What about the job prospects in the oil sands of Alberta? I heard they pay 100,000/year. And they train you for free. |

Huh? They make this money in 3 or 4 weeks, not exactly comparable money.
I do realize it is ridiculously hard work and dangerous. |
