Soooo....we don't need an interview to renew our visa, or at least it sounds that way. [There has been some contradictory posts in the last 24 hours, 1 from recruiters and the other from the Busan embasy meeting.]
But, to me it doesn't sound like those of us looking to renew can celebrate not having to spend the money on a return ticket just yet.

We need police checks to renew our visa. From what I have read, it is very quick to get checks done at local police stations, but you have to be in Canada. Alternatively, we can get RCMP checks done from here, but it sounds like it takes 120 days minimum, which wouldn't be here in time for University teachers to renew in March. Better book our flights now, I suppose.

Has anyone ever had an RCMP police check done? What was your experience with it? Does anyone have any reason to believe returning to Canada to renew in March won't be necessary?

I've had a RCMP check done for US Immigration. Took 3 months to arrive. Just make sure you get your fingerprints taken clearly--not smudged, or they'll send them back to be re-done.

The ID and Pass section at Yongsan (right near the USO) does fingerprints properly, and they do them on Dept of Justice forms (English). I don't know if that service is available to civilians of any nationality however--could be worth checking out though.

Are you sure you can't get a local police check done without being there, or did you just hear that?

Not Canadian, but my mom was able to get my local police check for me, and if the local PD is okay, what about those online ones that have been acceptable for public school jobs for some time now?

Edit: Which post is from the recruiter?

Edit 2: nevermind, found it.

I had a RCMP check completed before I came and it took two days to complete. It depends on how busy they are at the time. They do a criminal record check and a vulnerable persons check. I did not have to submit fingerprints they run you through the system with your name and birthdate.
In the past I had to have these checks completed on persons for Social Services. Some had to send their prints to Ottawa, I think those with a record, but I'm not sure.

Actually, I'm not sure. I have only read that. But now that you mention it, I think I will give my local PD a call and see what they have to say.

Thanx.

Tha's fast. That would definitely be fast enough.

To do the RCMP search from overseas, I've been told you have to send it to Ottawa. Did you send it to Ottawa to have yours done.

I was in Canada and they do not always need your fingerprints. They send to Ottawa for confirmation I believe if you have a record. I live on the prairies so the RCMP are the local police unless you live in a larger city.
I don't know what the process is like for those already in Korea and need a check, I suspect it would be longer.

Wow, you must go back to your home country to get a background check despite not being there for the whole time.

Hope the school pays for it or salary rises sufficiently to compensate for this.

Isn't a police check in Korea good enough anymore?

What next?

Shocked

Even Koreans know their police are useless.

Check my post on the Daejeon Ministry of Justice session. It discusses the police check situation mostly.

Well, if you have been in Korean for at least a year, then a Korean police check would be more relevant since you're not at home to get in trouble.

The immigration lady said it is their responsibility to keep your Korean information on file, but since they don't have access to your file in your home country, they need a copy of it.

I guess all of us folks renewing in December can get a provisional visa. Give me break. You just don't announce something in Nov. and put it into effect in Dec. What a bunch of morons. Rolling Eyes
