Does anyone know if anabolic steroids are legal in Korea?
Not that I am interested in those gonad shrinking madness inducing
marvels of modern science, but just out of curiosity.
I am noticing that a lot of my students are returning from summer break
suddenly all muscled-up. I swear they were just thin normal Korean kids before spring term ended, but now I have a damn legion of marshmellow-muscle monsters sitting in my classes.
I've been living here and working out a long time, but it was only until today that this totally caught my attention.
nyone else notice this very sudden puffing-up of Korea's dudes? |

Of course they're not, in any event why would juice have to be legal for people to get access to it?! Doesn't follow. BTW, the dangers of steroids are highly exagerated... |

Not sure if it's legal but it does appear that a few Korean male celebrities, which I will not name, take steroids. And it's pretty obvious when you watch them on variety television shows, cuz they've got huge pimples on their faces that even the best makeup and lighting cannot hide. |

It's funny you mentioned that. I, too, have noticed an influx of muscleheads at my gym and around the streets of Gangnam lately. Things in Korea tend to move in big influential waves. It's likely that some Korean TV show, movie, blog, or magazine potrayed being muscular as the way to be and everyone went out and bought some Megamass and jumped aboard the bandwagon. I'm not joking. |

Why is this so surprising? Steroids are everywhere! Most athletes in most major sports use them, most action movie stars use them, everyone uses them...don't see what the big deal is?! |

You can probably get them if you bribe your doctor. |

There were some articles in local papers about the recent spread of Steriods in Korea... I'll see if I can find them. |

Maybe because I like these celebrities. I liked them before I came to Korea, still like them now.
It's like a crush that's hard to kick. |

I don't think there are any Korean celebrities that use steroids, at least not in substantial dosages. If there are, they are small enough that you wouldn't necessarily be able to distinguish between low-dosage steroid use and good old 'natural' training, unless, that is, they revealed dramatic lean mass increase.

What initially attracted me to them were their slim figures and pretty faces. But for some reason later on, they started working out and adding bulk to their bodies. From then on whenever I saw them on TV, there were these huge lumps of acne on their faces that weren't there before!! Knowing the side effects of steriods and how desperate their producers are about showbiz and improving their image, I had this horrible feeling that my pretty boys were gonna end up messing up their pretty skin and looking bigger and they did!! They no longer have their waif thin bodies anymore! |

Don't know of its legal status but do know that K bodybuilders can be very candid about their use. I know several at my gym whose english levels range from very bad to very good and they have mentioned their HGh, deca/d-bol/winstrol use, oral, injectable, and one guy even mentioned, get this, drinkable (didn't know such a product existed).
If it was legal I wouldn't think they would be so open about it. I know BB's back home are alot more hush hush about it and for good reason.
I don't know, I'd be a liar if I didn't say that I find it very tempting.
On the other hand, I've also noticed some K BB's (2 guys to be exact) like 5'7" and 210 one day and 5'7" 150 six months later! You don't lose that kind of lean mass from dieting or injury.
By the way, my gym is apparently a roided bodybuilder factory. It's really sad when some of the guys are taking in so much of it for mass that they already, even though they are not that big, are showing dramatic intenstinal puffing/roid gut. |

Found this in the digital chosun. Doesn't really answer the question but kind of does (see the bold):
The Dangers of Quick-Fix Body Building
More and more ordinary people wrestle with the temptation to take steroids to pump up their muscles fast. Some TV stars take them, and even teenagers swallow them without much thought. Belatedly, the Korea Food and Drug Administration is to classify anabolic steroids, which are similar to male sex hormones, in a special restricted category.
Anabolic steroids basically accelerate protein synthesis, increasing muscle mass and strengthening the muscles in a short time. Many athletes and bodybuilders take them to get short-term results, most famously perhaps Ben Johnson, the runner who was deprived of his gold medal in the Seoul Olympics in 1988 for taking the drugs. Anabolic steroids also speed up the process of generating energy in the body and allow it to generate explosive power.
They also stimulate the bone marrow cells and enable them to generate a lot of blood cells and thus increase oxygen consumption. But if taken for more than 12 weeks, they can cause dangerous side effects.
Dr. Kim Dong-hyun at the Doping Control Center of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology says they can cause heart attack, stroke, decline of liver function, a diabetics' impaired glucose tolerance, a decline of testicular function, insomnia and emotional instability, when constantly used. Especially for teenagers, body development may be retarded. A girl may end up with a husky voice and smaller breast. And there are many athletes who died young among steroid takers."
The next best way for bodybuilders is protein supplements, which have no severe side effects ? unless they include steroids, as some brands do. Protein supplements help to build muscles, but of course they may lead to problems if taken in excess.
Prof. Ryu Byung-ok of Soonchunhyang University Hospital says, "If protein is taken excessively, it is transformed to fat, thus it can make people gain weight and also cause side effects such as acidification of blood, arthritis, dehydration or osteoporosis. Except for athletes who exercise continuously, it isnt easy to build muscles only by taking protein supplements."
