I am planning on working in Korea this summer through my company. I hope to take a 4 day hiking and camping trip in Chiri san with my wife on my time off. I want to go sometime in July or early to mid August. What is the best time to go hiking during that time period. I want to avoid the monsoon. Can anyone give me any tips on what to take. How comfortable are the mountain huts? Costs? What kind of food is available at the huts. We plan to traverse the entire length of the park.

Just a word of warning- I'm sure you've heard about the deaths that have occurred on and around Jiri-san over the past few years due to flash floods and landslides. You may not remember, but as I recall it these tragic accidents didn't actually happen during the monsoon season but in August when typhoons often blow over onto the peninsula. For more info you might want to contact KTNO.

i stayed in Jirisan for a night, it was in an unfurnished cabin that had a shower, range, floor heating and fridge and a ton of blankets and korean stlye sleepers it was 40,000 and in a really nice spot next to a river> > >

there are also lots of Minbaks. . .which are really cheap(i stayed in one on Jeju for 20,000) and they're usually good(similar to a yogwon, but actually meant for travellers!).

as far as the time of year don't go on any korean national hoilday, it'll be packed, and you'll have to book anything weeks in advance, go after august, Septmeber is beautiful and sunny, spring is also nice but there is the occasional thunder storm. . .

hiking the enitre traverse is long and can vary from 15-50km or more depending on where you start, and there are numerous trails to choose from like most korean Mtns.

don't know as far as those huts go, heard they were like ski shacks with bunks, for under 10,000. . .but you also have to book ahead

I kind of lapsed as I often do, well in this case it is the pneumonic plague ,into rhapsodizing and decided to hit page 500 or whatever it was to the first posts here. Dating from 2003.

I loved the one about "Hepatitis B injections" a frightening idea! I also liked the post from Shasta about the quality of "mountain huts" on Chiri san.

I think I'm going to start responding to these things. See if they pop up to the top.

Maybe PM some of the posters.
