Hello all,
I was watching KBS 2 last night about 11~12pm and it was about (wait for it) all the illegal and bad foreign teachers in Korea. It was quite interesting to watch the EFL industry perceived through Korean eyes.
It focused mainly upon Christopher Neil and how he was able to teach in Korea. They went to his old apartment and had a look around and found some things that belonged to Chris Neil. They tried to speak to the school and the principal didn't wish to speak to the reporter and eventually Dave's ESL Cafe was on there.
They showed the type of jobs available for English Teachers and their salary ("look how much they earn, and they could be teaching your kids!!!!"). This was also supported by some chimp of an EFL Teacher who was caught off guard and asked why he works in Korea, he got his wallet out and shouted "What's this????", "It's cash. Why do you think people come to Korea? Because no other country pays more for English teachers!!!". He stormed off and didn't want to be filmed no more. I guess the chimp was having a bad day but I was embarrassed to see a fellow teacher treat Koreans with such distaste and contempt.
Anyways, the programme also looked at recruiters and how recruiters don't really look at qualifications etc for teachers and are just interested in money.
Nice to see that Koreans are starting to uncover the real reason why English education in this country has attracted the "scum of society" (from the KBS 2 programme).
Nonetheless, I was wondering whether anyone else watched this last night and if there is a link to the programme as it was generally interesting???
Yeah foreigners do get treated badly in the show but they provide an example of some teacher in Suwon (public school) who is starting to do well and integrate well with the students and other staff. Nice to see it wasn't all bad news on EFL Teachers.
Anyways, who saw it? Did you enjoy? Where can I watch it again?
Btw, the programme was called "축자 60분" (not sure of spelling as but also known as "In-depth 60 minutes") on KBS2. |

If this caught you off-guard, you haven't been reading Dave's ESL Cafe very much. It is all too typical of all too many posts here. |

True. I wouldn't be suprised if the guy is a regular poster. |

Didn't see that but I did see some police documentary that featured the arrests of various foreigners for various "crimes".
One showed some white guy being hauled off for having an argument and trashing (his?) appartment. It then shows him at the police station being roughed up by the police (while doing nothing to provoke them).
Watching these shows you would believe Korea was sinking under a virtual crime wave of foreigners.

I wonder how many good interviews with polite foreigners they had to throw out before they found one who was having a bad day? |

The guys is probably some dork on here that is all pissed off about the new regs and hase decided to leave Korea after his contract, so he probably didn't care if he gave the rest of us a bad name.
What salaries were they showing by the way? The usual jobs that offer the standard 2.0 or 2.2 shouldn't be that impressive. When I was making 2.0 in my first contract I had Koreans argue with me that I was definitely making more when they asked me. The money's ok, but its hardly anything to write home about. The only reason they get as many people as they do here is because times are tough back home. |

They were quoting salaries of 2.2 to 2.5 million KRW for newbies. They showed some adverts from Dave's ESL Cafe and decided to round all EFL Teacher's salaries at the band of 2.5m KRW. They decided to conclude that the salary is drawing criminal recruiters and criminal teachers in to Korea. |

Its surely a tiny fraction of teachers here that earn 2.5M as a base pay. if they do they usually are well qualified or well experienced. And I highly doubt any of those are newbies.
At least its a reduction on the 5M they previously seemed to think we're all earning.
If Koreans really want rid of foreigners they should simply just stand up and say so. I'd respect that more.Same goes for US forces here.
Instead they prefer to play the victim and keep us around as an object for their xenophobia. |

If they are so concerned about the quality of people teaching English, I think my country should be equally worried about the standard of counter-jockeys and sushi waiters. |

Salary asking questions? They are THE thing which has pissed me off most in Korea (and I'm an apologist):
I was in Yeosu and wanted to go to Suncheon but it was just before payday so I was poor and wanted to take the bus. I was taking a taxi to the bus terminal. The taxi driver asked where I worked. I told him "Yeosu University" he told me very good very good.
He then asked where I was going, and I told him Suncheon. He said he'd drive me there for $50. I said no thanks, the bus terminal please. He told me I earned 3 million a month because I worked at the University so I should take his taxi there. I told him I DIDN'T earn that much. He called me a liar and gave me a couple of "Aiiiish"ss I told him that, really, I earned 2.2m, not 3m. He started shouting at me that he KNEW that I was a liar, and a BAD MAN at that. Then he told me again to take the taxi to Suncheon. This is obviously the kind of behaviour one loves in the back of a cab..
Then he offered me a special discount. I could pay just 40,000won if he could pick up someone at the bus terminal who'd pay 10,000 won. I was not impressed. He couldn't understand why I'd be upset at paying 40k while another passenger paid 10k. He thought he was offering me an awesome deal.
He spent the rest of the distance calling me a cheap bastard, a liar about my salary, and also a canny businessman if I took up his offer of just $40 if he could find a second to share a ride.
I eventually got out and paid my 4,000won fare at the bus stop.
That was my second worst cab ride. The worst was when on a $20 cab ride the 50ish yr old driver wanted to get a bottle of whiskey and go to a love motel with me ( no lie, really, really happened). |

Don't believe everything you see on TV. He could be a paid actor that serves to emphasize their point. It's possible. Who would say that on Korean TV? |

I was the foreign teacher who was interviewed and I stand by what I said. Nobody paid me. They wanted the truth, so now they got it. And yes I was having a bad day, as just prior some elementary students were mocking me with the 'hello, hello, hello' greeting.
And only days ago an oblivious foreigner was in my way and had the nerve to step into the same subway car as me. I've had it up to here.
And I'm not a chimp. |

Maybe he's fed up with Korean society, especially the media, treating foreigner teachers with contempt. |

The same thing was mentioned on CCTV and when the Chinese government threatened to put Dave's on the banned list of websites, he made it so that only suscribed members were only able to see and post on the China Off-Topic forum.......
I think it is time the Korean General and Off-Topic forums are formatted the same way........
If the Koreans can block their opinionated forums from foreign view, why can't we do the same???
ESL is a business, nothing more nothing less...it is all about money......once people realize this, the better off everyone will be..... |

He probably was just having a bad day... or week... or month... or life... Maybe he's been burned by his employer or an ex(Korean) and feeling extra spiteful. Understandable. But what he said and the manner in which he did it... lol. Man, that's bad. I can only imagine what it looked like.
Anyhow, trying to extinguish a fire by throwing gasoline at it is just some people's way of doing things.
I'm watching this right now(rather I'm 'streaming' it on my blazing 56k)
http://www.mongdori.com/forums/read.php?2,589 Is this the one you're talking about? |
