I had a strange day the other day.

We were doing about parts of the body. One of my students said Pinky. I said that's not a body part, there's no such thing! The student discovered a missing gap in my knowledge that's for sure (I asked my family that night and my mom hadn't heard of it either although everyone else had).

Later in the lesson though I returned the compliment as I inadvertently taught first, my co-teacher and then the students a Korean word (결후), which is one of a couple of words for Adam's Apple in Korean.

I've often learned things from my students but that's the first time any young student has taught me some English. Has anyone else ever learned any new English from their students?

You didn't known that the pinky is the little finger? Wow.

I've heard that there's no word for "knuckle" in Korean. I was teaching a student "knuckle sandwich". Asked him the Korean word for this body part and he didn't know.

Depending on context, it could also refer to the pinky toe (or even Pinky Tuscadero).

You didn't know pinky?

They have words for forefinger, middle, etc but rarely use them as far as I can tell. However, every Korean I know knows the word 인중 and I had to ask my nurse mother what that was. Wink

(The 인중 is the philtrum.)

I'm from England...

Isn't pinky American English? I'm not sure about that...

In England I have never heard that finger referred to as anything other than Little Finger...

I taught that to my students.
They used to come in complaining that they were hungry.
They don't ask for food anymore when I say 'want a knuckle sandwich?'

I never heard of 'pinky' until I started using the internet in 1996. I learned it from Yanks online. If any british know that term from before then I bet it was a regional term rather than common across the nation. I didn't learn about
'pinky swears' until I came to Korea. I've received 'pinky swears' for a lot of dates since then though. I fulfilled about 25% of my dating promises. Maybe less. I guess I don't respect the 'pinky swear' enough.

I knew about pinky swears since grade 3 or thereabouts, but until Korea I didn't know about the "dojang" (touch thumbs while pinky swearing), "sign" (tickle their palm with your finger), and "photocopy" (slide your palm across theirs) parts.

I guess the seriousness of the promise is a facotr of how many of these things you do for the promise; all 4 parts would make you a dead man to break it.

Maybe similar to pinky swear back home, plus "lick it , stick, stamp it" and "touch blue to make it true"

It was taken to America by Dutch colonists.

I only ever heard pinky on American TV programmes growing up, and never now hear an English person refer to their little finger as a pinky...
