I'm going to Qingdao next weekend, just a short trip, staying along the seafront and hoping to hire a bike and buzz around the city on Saturday.

Does anyone have any tips for things I must see / do / eat / drink / buy?

I lived there for a little over 4 months at the end of my sojurn in China. Qingdao is on my list of one of the most beautiful cities in China. Having been built by the Germans, there's lots of cool European architecture.

With only two days, you'll be a little pressed for time to see everything, so I'd say the 5 Don't Miss Sights are:

1. Laoshan, the holiest mountain in China. Located just outside Qingdao it's the birthplace of the Daoist religion.

2. Ba Da Guan, the core of the old German town. Lots of beautiful 19th European buildings.

3. Huashi Lou, the only German castle in China, perhaps in Asia.

4. Xiaoqingdao, a cool little island in the middle of Qingdao harbour.

5. Tsingtao Brewery. free samples, enough said. Though you can only book tours through CINC.

As for food and drink, the local speciality is squid on a stick, and many bars there have Tsingtao beer on tap.

That's a great list, is it ranked in order? Because I get there on Friday evening and leave early on Sunday

It's ranked in the order I found most interesting, but to each their own.

Please post some info after you get back as that is also on my list of 3-4 day trips to make. I see you have a blog-you'll probably post it there right?

Qingdao looks like a nice place.

But it's located quite far north (between Daegu and Seoul lattitudinally), so it may be quite cool this time of year. And does it have much air pollution? It sure must get hit hard by the yellow sand of springtime.

When is the best time of year to visit?

Has anyone else been to Qingdao lately? Has anyone taken a bicycle over there? Any suggestions besides the ones already listed? I'm thinking of going over around New Year's Day.

Qingdao is too hilly for bicycles. Its one of the only chinese cities where people don't ride bikes

How hilly is it? None of the pictures I've seen look too bad.
