Aussies go to the polls today to choose our next prime minister.
Popular opinion has Labor in the lead, but the Coalition has a chance in a very tight election.
Who's gonna win it?
Only two choices, since we have a two party system ... i call it pseudo-democracy!  |

Well, hopefully. There's not so much difference between Labour and the Liberals, but Labour still have to at least pretend to care about the common man. Howard was very divisive and played to people's worst prejudices. Hopefully Rudd will avoid that kind of ugliness. But we'll see. Hopefully Labour will take the environment and climate change much more seriously too. And licking your own earwax is a far more benign practice than tossing refugees and their small children into concentration camps in the middle of the desert. |

I'm a Kiwi but I lived in Qland for a bit and I thought in Aussie politics that Labour policy was a lot more,how can i say,built up from local level,and with a bi-cameral government that entailed more checks and balances along the way.
NZ Labour in the 1980s,under a unicameral system just went full steam ahead,thinking that was their stint,perhaps.
I know I'm talking about different labour governments at different times,but "labour" in the south pacific definitively diverged at some point.Any idea of labour working as a "social laboratory" disappeared in Australia with Howard,it's come back to some degree in NZ.
Liberals,I know nothing about them.Do they signal something good and how?

The Liberals are the conservative party. They 'signal something good' if you run a big company or are a multi-millionaire.
How did you come by your name btw? Do you like Half Man Half Biscuit? I haven't heard of them for years, but some of their songs were pretty funny. |

The Labor Party / ALP have promised to:
* remove all combat troops from Iraq, asap
* sign the Kyoto Protocol immediately
* roll back 'Workchoices'
* improve Education in Oz by providing pc's in schools
* Increase the Health care budget

| The rodent's finally gone. I still can't believe it, he was the one who no one seemingly liked (besides my Mum and Dad) but would always get re-elected. I'm pleasantly surprised and glad that the Howard era is finally over and that that nasty, divisive chapter of Australian history has been closed. |
