Shin Admits Byeon Was Lover

By Kim Tae-jong
Staff Reporter

A degree scamming professor Tuesday admitted that a former presidential secretary was her romantic partner, who allegedly peddled influence to help her.

The confirmation came from the second hearing in the trial of former Dongguk University professor Shin Jeong-ah and former presidential policy planner Byeon Yang-kyoon.

The 35-year-old former professor said the two had been in the relationship since the fall of 2003. Previously, she said they were just ``friends,'' who shared similar artistic tastes.

But she denied the allegation that he put pressure on large-sized companies to donate funds to Sungkok Art Museum where Shin had been a curator since 2005.

The two were indicted together in October. They both denied the major charges laid against them in the first hearing although they said they felt sorry for all the trouble they had caused.

The Monday's trial was also scheduled to be a joint hearing but the prosecution asked the court to hold it separately due to the possibility that the two could give false testimony.

Shin is charged with using forged graduate degrees from the Universities of Kansas and Yale to get hired as a professor at Dongguk University and as an art director of the Gwangju Biennale.

She is also charged with embezzling some of an art museum's funds and arranging sales of artworks from artists to government agencies, keeping some of them for herself.

The 58-year-old former presidential secretary is charged with influence peddling as he allegedly pressed Dongguk University officials in 2005 to hire Shin with her fabricated academic credentials. In exchange for her employment, he promised to help the school get government subsidies. He also peddled influence to get Shin selected as the Gwangju Biennale director in July.
