It is a hassle free process to get your police clearance certificate.

Make an appointment with the embassy in Seoul. They will see you on Tuesdays and Thursdays to do the fingerprinting. If you live outside Seoul they will allow you to make an appointment on another day.

You need to take your passport and your South African ID book with you. After being fingerprinted you need to send all the documents to a family member or friend back home who can take it to the police record center in Pretoria.

Visit the following websites for more information:

http://www.southafrica-embassy.or.kr/eng/forsa/consular_8.php
http://www.dfa.gov.za/consular/policeclear.htm

Just make sure that you type up a simple letter of permission so that your family or friend can actually pick up your clearance certificate. Just state your name and Idnr along with the name of the person who will pick up the certificate and their Idnr.

I blah blah blah Idnr: 00000000000000000 hereby give so and so Idnr: 9999999999 permission to collect my police clearance certificate as I am currently abroad and unable to do so myself.

Sign and date it.

Something like that.

The record center told me a local record check will take one month but a request from abroad will take 2 months. Why? I have no idea.

Feel free to contact me for more info.

Thanks, it's useful to know. I got mine done way back when I was still in SA, but I only had it mailed recently (by my family).
I had to get a new passport done through Seoul. Instead of 3 months, they told me it would take 8 months (meaning 'October)...however, it arrived in May. Weird.
