"Employer may designate Employee to work at an English Camp, Provincial
Office of Education, training center or other educational institute during the
vacation. In this case, Employee shall not claim for any additional pay."

This is an excerpt from a proposed EPIK contract. How many of you have had to work these camps "against your will". Do you just take your vacation at a different time or ?

thanks,
tdk/Dustin

Vacation and "vacation" are two different things indeed. What, did you just expect to sit on your butt all vacation?

In truth it all depends on your school!
that's in every Epik contract.

Camps are a choice.............Sorta! But, camps you do get paid extra. However, if they wanted they can make you work your regular hours the whole time without extra pay.

The deal is 50/50. If you have a GOOD relationship I mean a real one with your boss/ everyone then getting time off is not a real issue. Sadly
I know cats who sat in empty schools during vacation and only got the 1 week as outlined in the contract. And I know others who had lock down type camps and some cats were told that they wouldn't get paid if they left the country. So best bet is talk to your Adim people and work with your school.

I do fine! I DO like to work a 10day or so camp before vacation because it pays for my flights and some spending money. But, opted out this vacation because I needed the whole time to jump home take care of some things and then jump to vacation.

good luck

if you have a specific question PM i'll try and help

at most EPIK schools YOU only get 5-7 days of vacation during the school's vacation period. the rest of the time u will be teaching camps, usually they're about 3-4 hrs a day for a week. some days during the school vacation you won't have any camps, but u will still be required to stay. remember, u did agree and sign this contract.

my advice to u is to plan a couple short lessons a day, play some games based on the lesson to let the info sink in, then have the kids do some INDEPENDENT WORK. make a skit, design a travel poster, journals. space them out evenly, so u'll teach for 15-20min, game for 15, then independent work for 20ish.

i did so much stuff during my past summer camps and the kids loved it, but i found i never had a break (even when i declared '10min break', the kids huddled around me and waited). plan your camp out carefully enough with independent work, and it'll make your camp go much quicker.
good luck!

Thanks Spliff, I had thought about going on a trip somewhere....

I plan on going to GWD, so I will have a longer vacation then others, so I definitely do not want to spend the entire time or the bulk of it teaching.

Thanks!

yeah, i only get 7 days off in my contract in the winter (14 days total). my principal, VP, and main "handler" are d1ck-heads, quite honestly. i asked once to leave an hr early one day after my camp was done, and got a big "no".

Yep, it comes down to the school and Office of Education. One of the perks of living out in the sticks here is that let you have the long holidays. If they didn't I doubt they'd be able to fill the positions. Last summer I worked a one week summer camp and got paid for it, then I had three and a half weeks off. My particular province doesn't run that many summer camps and hardly any winter ones, and they're voluntary. You're not forced at all. I feel happy that i get 3ish weeks and 6 weeks off in the winter. That's part of the reason I signed the contract.

I think if you're in a big city, there's the prestige of summer and winter camps so there's a lot of them running, so generally you HAVE to work them. I think that's what that clause is pointing towards. They have to have the native teachers to do the camps. But as with EPIK it's interpretation of the contract.

Will have to check over my new contract, when I re-sign in June, really hoping it's not gonna be too different from my current one.

Info regarding all things beyond xmas is a bit slow coming forward at my school (came in this morning to find that my favourite CT whom I sit next too is now the new VP!). I've been told that I'll have 2-weeks of winter camp at the school where I teach for 3-hours per day, which isn't so bad as I've studying to get on with.

While we're on the subject etc, I'm aware that personal vacation terms vary from school to school, but what's the story for the KTs? Are they expected to sit in school with me or are they allowed to 'disappear' for a few weeks? I only ask as one of my CTs has enrolled on an 8-week TESOL course in Busan, which will be running for 4-days per week meaning that I doubt we'll see her for a while and just wanted to know what time the KTs get off.

Is there a website that lists the school calendars per POE?

Thanks,

i don't know anyone that actually has a KT in the classroom during camp season. for my first camp in the summer, my co-teacher showed up to take attendance, and then she left after 10min....never saw her again til school began.
but i prefer teaching my camps without my KT around, that means i can do whatever i want with the kiddies!! Laughing ...and i won't get dirty looks when i give them some independant stuff to do

edit: my KTs get the entire vacation off, although they are required to come in once or twice during that time. sometimes they'll be sent to some English workshop somewhere

^ No, I didn't mean as in co-teaching in winter camp with the FT, I meant what time off do KTs get generally? Are they expected to twiddle their thumbs for about 6-weeks also?

i once asked my co-teacher if i was going to be all alone in the school for vacation, and she said "yes, the teachers need their rest!" luckily my chuckling wasn't obvious to her...
