Because my boss believed immigration and not me, and immigration was telling her that OF CoURSE the US embassy did criminal checks, I got an email from the embassy saying, so, we don't do that.
She called immigration back...they said they knew that The US Embassy said they wouldn't do it, but because Korea wanted them to, they would keep the "pressure up." Then they told her, ALL the other embassies do it, so the US embassy will have to. |

To the best of my knowledge, NONE of the embassies do it.
All of them, the embassies, refer their citizens to the appropriate police service in their home countries.
Someone at immigration is in for a big wakeup call here real soon.

I know they don't, tt. I'm just amazed that Korean Immigration thinks they'll be able to pressure them into it. Incredible! |

The embassies (especially the Canadian embassy) want nothing more than to sit on their ass doing nothing all day. Why would they bow down to Korean Immigration just because they are getting "pressured"? They'll tell Immi to sit and spin, then go back to eating their donut and ignoring the people in line to get new passports. |

Ah Korea. "Let's pass laws but not check if they match reality." |

Doesn't Korea know the US pushes them around, not the other way around? |

When Westerners are scrambling to get into this place for life, rather than just quick cash, then they can make such demands. For now, however, Korea seems to be exporting all of its smartest people to other countries, as well as a growing share of the female population to foreign marriages.
I think embassies such as the US and Canada are plenty busy with those applications. |

I have found the Canadian Embassy to be very good. I write my exams there for my MBA and they always go out of their way to help me. But they know what is happening here in Korea and have said many times they can not do it. I hope the Koreans will push to hard on our embassies and that will make life harder for Koreans overseas. I hope they have to go and get there degree's check and then find out they all have fake degree's running their corner stores and laundry mats. |

It;s not the place of an Embassy to do this. Point is in a year or whatever people will do this BEFORE entering Korea.
Outside of emergencies or passport, marriage cert type stuff the shouldnt help you. Some of you think they should come by and clean your apartment. |

Oh, horse manure! Embassy personnel do not sit on their duffs all day. There are quite a lot of duties for both the consular and other sections. As there are already governmental agencies with cognizance over criminal records, those agencies are the people to see, not the embassy or consulate. |

Maybe you visit a more cooperative Canadian Embassy than I. I've had to renew my passport twice, and have gotten nothing but hassle and attitude from them. They seem put upon that they must process my application. Oh no! Work! How long is their lunch break anyway? 2 hours?

I wasn't arguing this. I don't think it's an embassy's job to help with criminal checks. Agencies exist that already do this. |
