Quote:
A South Korean man initially thought to have been killed by an exploding mobile phone battery was in fact crushed by a quarry vehicle, police have said.
The man was found dead on Wednesday with a melted battery in his pocket and his heart and lungs punctured.

But police in Cheongju said a colleague later confessed that he had backed into the victim while reversing a construction vehicle.

They said the colleague had tried to cover up the accident.

Police are investigating whether the battery exploded during the accident or the colleague set it on fire.

The body of the 33-year-old South Korean was found in a quarry where he worked in Cheongwon County in North Chungcheong Province, 135km (85 miles) south of Seoul.

A doctor had said burns on the man's chest, and fractures of his ribs and spine as well as haemorrhaging in the lungs could have been caused by an exploded battery.

But preliminary autopsy results later suggested damage to the man's organs was too heavy to have been caused by such an explosion, prompting police to investigate the colleague who reported the death.

Police said the phone had been made by LG Electronics.

The company said on Friday that it had confirmed the death had no connection to its handset or battery, in contrast to previous media coverage.

"LG rigorously tests all the products not only for functionality and design, but safety as well," the company added.

how the hell did the doctors confuse 'crushed by vehicle' and 'phone explosion'?

That's why I only go to Western-trained doctors in Korea.

What a bizarre way to cover up your crime. "Hmmm let's go with something never heard of before. We could say a UFO landed on him or we could say he was killed by an exploding cell phone."

Dumb dumb dumb.

Easiest of mistakes - could've happened anywhere.

Now I really can't wait for the (rumoured) E2 medical checks to come into effect. Shocked

I guess with Koreans being such good drivers in general they didn't initially think of a vehicle being involved - a phone explosion seems much more plausible than poor driving... Wink

Was the guy a pancake? If not, I can't see there being enough pressure to make a phone melt down despite there being enough pressure to kill him.

Here's what I don't get: the doctor initially ruled that the cause of death was an exploding cell phone battery, even though pictures of the phone clearly show that it had melted.

What a dumb ass.

I wondered if it was a doctor confirming it was an exploding cell phone injury or just the news reporting the initial claim by the police. But sure enough to quote the UPI report:

A doctor was quoted as saying the victim had a black mobile phone with a severely melted battery in his left shirt pocket. X-rays showed the man suffered damaged heart, lungs and fractured ribs.

"The accident was highly likely caused by an explosion, given the damaged conditions of his shirt," the doctor told Chosun Ilbo. "The area near the wound indicated it was burned by a blast."

Doesn't this idiot know even the most basic principles of science? If the battery had exploded, how in pluperfect hell could it still be intact? It was melted! The level of idiocy in this case is astounding.

Why did the battery melt? Was the guy a pancake after getting run over? It said he had fractured ribs, not crushed ribs, yet the impact force from the accident (that only fractured ribs) was enough to melt a phone?

Can sitting on a phone make the battery melt? Dropping it?
