I just ate at an oyster restaurant (shik tang). Wow. I had seen the place and was meaning to go. Outside they've got them fresh in tanks. The place is open until 5 am. I was at home all day thinking about it and decided to take a trek out after midnight.

They're huge. And I ate them raw with beer and some with hot pepper sauce. They gave me a baker's dozen and some samplers beforehand (maybe a half dozen in a dish - smaller ones, maybe - without the shell).

Great experience, but I would rather open them myself. That's half the fun.

They've got meat and stuff, too (bbq setup). Asked about the beef and it's American. Pretty expensive though at 25,000 for 500 grams. It would definitely be a good place to go with one or a few friends. Maybe get pork, but I would splurge for the beef. Bbq beef and raw oysters. Good stuff.

Some blood, peppery soup and a little dish of marinated (soy sauce) garlic with some hot green peppers were served with it.

Sorry, I just went out. They overcharged me at Bitheway. Idiots. I hate that...

I'm in a small town not far from the seaside.

In Ch'ungch'eong province. Very close to the ocean. A couple of hours South of Seoul. I've never seen such a place before. Sure, I've seen shellfish restaurants or tents, but they seemed to have these specially. I'm figuring it's the time of year for them. I mentioned it to my boss and my adult class (2 students), but they didn't say anything about it being the time of year for them. It must be though. Just like it was for those huge shrimp a couple of months ago. Come to think of it, there's a highway-side seafood place close to my school and it seems they're busier lately. Could be because of the oysters.

Maybe there are some places in Seoul, but it's not exactly oceanside.

Ah, 저깨(sp??)

If anyone has studied Korean or been a part of Korean culture for some time, then you should be knowledgeable of the alternate meaning of this word. ^^

The word for clam, or the more generic shellfish, is 조개.
The word for oyster is 굴.

Mmmmmm...oysters....and grilled beef.....

25,000 won for 500 grams? That is waaaaaaaaaaaay cheap compared to where I live -- kalbisal is about 8,000 per 100 grams, though a few places will give you 120 grams, and straight-up kalbi is 16,000 for 150 grams most places....

Man, am I hungry now Razz

No, it's got walls and a ceiling. A little more classier, if you will.

Yeah, but it's American beef. They're charging about four times the price, just like they are for Korean beef at other places. But whatever. I could care less. I guess when they charge per gram, the prices will look higher. Pork looked highly priced there compared to other places, but other places are charging by the portion and not necessarily by grams. And you always have to order two portions at those places. So maybe the same.

The big, or king, oyster are 13,000 for 12. The smaller oysters are the same price for 15. I had the king ones, of course.

Not bad. A huge feed of huge oysters and the trimmings and a beer for 16,000.
