Huh? I said.
He said that if a foreign employee wants to work for a school for more than two years then the school has to sponsor them for 'full time status'. I am not sure what he meant by that term that didn't incorporate my current status....
I have no idea what he is talking about. Anybody? He said it like he truly believed it. |

What he meant was that we are temporary workers with fewer benefits. I haven't heard anything about a new 2 year rule, but he seems to be saying that if we stay longer than 2 years the government says we have to become permanent workers with more benefits. |

yeah this law went into effect awhile ago in order to protect temp workers but backfired as they all got fired the day before it became law.
Hadn't heard anything about it applying to E2 holders. Anyhow the basic idea is that after 2 years, you cannot be fired and are given more benefits - what those are I'm not sure. |

I have E-2 friends that have kept the same job for more than 2 years now. Same employer, just signed up again with them. |

That became an issue at universities over a year ago, I think, but the number of years after which full benefits kicked in was 5 years. |

I wonder if that has to do with pension. I'm guessing perhaps you haven't been paying pension over the last couple of years as your school has you listed as an individual contractor. Perhaps after a certain amount of time, they would have to list you as an employee and thus start paying pension? I'm not 100% on this, but it's a possibility. See if it applies to your situation.
There is another thread somewhere about how it is possible for schools to have you listed as an individual contractor and not pay pension, have a look if you're curious. |
