10 Samsung execs banned from travel

Wrapping up a four-day data hunt at Samsung Securities Co. yesterday, a senior prosecutor said 10 more suspects have been banned from leaving the country.
Kim Soo-nam told reporters yesterday that the search focused on obtaining employees' computer logs specifically to investigate slush fund allegations.
"We did not seize (Samsung) clients' transaction data; we selectively downloaded or printed out what was stated in the search warrant," Kim said.
"The main purpose (of the search) was to retrieve certain employees' computer logs which we will analyze scrupulously to see if there really was an organized management of slush funds."
Kim declined to specify the number of employees targeted or which computer logs.
Another "10 or so" suspects were banned from leaving the country after the raid on Friday, Kim said, putting the total to over 20.
"The investigation is based on the premise that all data and materials need to be handed over to the special counsel," he said. "But we will interrogate those who need to be questioned, now or never."
As independent prosecutors will be appointed to take over the case, the prosecution has said it would focus on the "necessary and urgent" parts of the investigation.
Prosecutors extracted 4.8 terabytes of computer files from the securities brokerage over the four days, according to sources.
They are also tracking transaction records of employees whose accounts have allegedly been used to amass the secret funds and questioning those who blew the whistle on Samsung.
A former legal counsel to Samsung Group submitted to the prosecution a list of more than 20 executives allegedly involved in the slush funds. Kim Yong-chul claims that Samsung used the slush funds to bribe high-profile social figures and to illicitly transfer managerial rights to Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee's son. Samsung denies the allegations.
