So, as posted elsewhere, I recently upgraded my computer to a Q6600 from an AMD 64 3000+. All is good. Except whenver I started playing demanding games, my computer would do a hard crash and reset. Yikes.
A little investigating would turn up that my video card was massively overheating, which at first seemed a bit strange given that I've had it for a year and it never overheated even once.
So, what I figure is that all my games were severely CPU limited before and the video card was never stressed, and therefore never overheated. Now that I've got the Q6600, my games are GPU limited and clearly my X1950 PRO is an overheating lemon, which I would have found out sooner had my CPU not been an aging dinosaur.
So, the good news is I now have a (valid) excuse to upgrade. Always gotta find that silver lining. |

Snap up an ATI HD3870. Mine is running great. 60-80 FPS in Crysis with everything on High (Very High is possible but not very playable). Same with Call Duty 4. A bit better actually.
The respected Sapphire brand is available now for 260,000.
If you can get an 8800GT, then great. But Yongsan is totally gouging everyone with those cards whenever a few trickle in.
The HD3870 offers a lot more bang-for-buck in the current Korean market. |

| Agreed. The 3870 is a good choice right now. Supposedly higher image quality than the 8800s as well. |
