Koreans' Favorite Five Sentences of 2007
What were the new social and cultural trends that had the greatest effects on the South Koreans in 2007? Since early October, the Chosun Ilbo held several rounds of talks with an advisory jury including Anwar Kemal, an expert of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (UNCERD) who served as a country rapporteur for South Korea, Lim Jie-hyun, a professor of history at Hanyang University, and novelist Kim Young-ha. In conclusion, the jury chose five key sentences.
"I earn W880,000 a month, but I havent lost hope US$1=W924)." The jury dedicates this sentence to young men and women in their 20s, who showed an optimism and creativity lacking in the older generation despite low wages and persistent youth unemployment.
"Real estate has lost momentum, but stocks and funds are on a roll." The jury found that in 2007, many peoples interest in managing their assets moved from real estate to stocks and financial funds.
"History becomes a national pastime." The jury chose to emphasize the boom of historical works and inquiries this year.
"Korea is becoming a multiethnic society." UNCERD recommended that South Korea recognize this, marking an important watershed in a society that was long regarded as entirely homogeneous.
"South Korea was not a victim but a perpetrator in the international community." The sentence signifies the confusion of identity South Koreans experienced, from a fire at the Yeosu Immigration Office detention center to the Taliban's kidnapping of Korean missionaries.
The Chosun Ilbo and the jury focused on big issues that will have direct and long-lasting effects on all our lives rather than on one-off incidents that made headlines only once.

I can't believe Lim and Kim were so honest.
They could have easily focussed on something irrelevant and deceitful like,
The public love for the tune 'Tell me, Tell me' shows Korea as being the Music Nation of Asia. |
